Pictures of .... OV-10 Bronco

Post by Trueno »

Hi all there,

Not much have been seen about this little but interesting COIN aircraft, one of my favourite visitors during my early years as spotter at Soesterberg, in the early 1980's.

However, I am sure many took pictures of those birds around the world, so post them here; USAF, US Navy, Marines, Latin or Asian Broncos... all welcome.

Show them :toppie:

In August I was one of the lucky photographers to join the Belgian Photocrew on one of their photoflights. I was even more lucky when I heard the freshly painted OV-10 from Tony de Bruyn would be one of the aircraft   :

At the moment I only have one slide of an OV-10 scanned in, so that will have to do for now.
This is 66-13562 of 601TCW, USAFE, based at Sembach, Germany, but seen here at Fairford on 17 july 1983. The IAT was one week later at Greenham Common!

(sorry for the lack of quality, but I was/am still learning how to scan and edit slides. This one was one of the first done last winter...)

Great little aircraft...

Just a question: is the aircraft marked 99+32 a different one than the one marked 99+24? If so, it seems to me we have two flying OV-10's in Europe then.

Some from me, first Mildenhall Air Fete, 28 May 1983, 68-3805 from 601 TASS.

The next month at Deelen during KLu's 70th anniversary, 68-3816 also from 601 TASS.

Nice shots, every one. The lovely recent shots of 99+24 and 99+32-are they considered to be warbird aircraft?

I remember the development phase of the Bronco during my High School days. It was in the newspapers all the time. Seemed like every rivet they drove into the "Tri-Service COIN aircraft" was newsworthy. The program resulted in an interesting small aircraft, but I recall it was a big, high cost program. Expectations were high.

Yes, they are different aircraft, but 99+24 suffered an engine-fire earlier this year, so currently it is not in flyable condition. 99+32 therefore is the only airworthy Bronco in Europe at this moment.

A few questions for the experts on German Broncos
1.Were the German OV-10B Broncos received new from the factory?
2.Was Germany the only operator of the OV-10B?
3.Was their only role that of target tug? No FAC mission at all?
4.Did they replace Douglas Skyraiders in that role?
5.Where they flown by civilians in support of WGAF?
6.Were the OV-10B aircraft ferried from the USA, and if so, did they have civil reg or military s/n?

From my records, it appears all OV-10D USMC derivatives were conversions of OV-10As.
