India seeks deal on C-17s...

Post by Stratofreighter »

Okay, it is only a submission of a "Letter of Request" to the US government so far, but it certainly doesn't have to end here...

Indian air force seeks deal for C-17 transports

By Craig Hoyle

New Delhi has submitted a letter of request to the US government for the possible future acquisition of up to 10 Boeing C-17 strategic transports for the Indian air force.

Announcing the development on 8 January, Boeing said it believes "the C-17 can fulfill India's needs for military and humanitarian airlift to help it meet its growing domestic and international responsibilities".

If it happens (which I think it will), they could end up with many more than those 10. Just look at the number of Il-76 they have....

That might be but I think these C17's come as addition to the fleet instead of replacing the IL-76's (when I remember correct there where contact last year about converting Indian AF IL76 to -90 with the newer engines; although I'm not sure about the outcome as some will be done as test-examples)

I think that the budget that can be spend will be the key in this part (as the C130J is also incoming, the Fighter-quest is still ongoing and new choppers are also inbound)

India operate 17 IL-76,which are not being replaced by the proposed C-17 purchase.

At a price tag of over $100 million each, the number of C-17A entering service in the Indian Air Force is not lightly to ever be high.

Really? Only that few? OK, in that case it will probably not become a large number.
