weekend @ Ramstein, nothing special but always relaxed

Post by stipjes »

Because of the nice weather we decided to try Ramstein this weekend. Together with the beers and schnitzels it was ok. I already replaced some pics which were over exposed but cant seem te get rid of the grey-ish/blue, any tips? (I did receive tips, see below, and added the data)

I agree! That sunset shots are very nice!

The shots halfway the selection seems to be overexposed.

Hello,

Thanks for the input. Somehow I cant always manage to get the right colours. I am photoshopping (with Raw pics) for a few months now but still have that problem, any tips?

Well, I tried photoshopping RAW images for a while. But it took way more time than editing JPG images. And some how I don't see any difference between my JPGs or RAW images.

Hello Rob,

This was indeed the first time I worked on Raws but it seems harder to get them correct. I reworked my pics above a bit and made them a bit darker but still I have the grey-ish colour. I hope to learn soon how to get rid of it.
The pic below I cannot get ok at all.... any tips from some-one? I put the original and the one that I worked on;

I will transfer my next question to the Photo questions forum.

The unedited version is much better than the other one.

Sometimes the conditions aren't as easy as we hope for.

Good luck!

Best regards, Rob.

I applied "auto colour" in Photoshop. Does this give the desired effect ?
(Other option : using WB setting on manual, and make a custom WB setting )

Just my 2 cents, but I would stay away from the auto color option, that rarely is an option which will work. I agree with Rob, the unedited picture looks way better than the modified one. Don't try to edit becaause of editing. I usually only make small modifications to levels, curves and black levels. But only minor corrections. Not to be smart or smuck, but try to shoot more manually, that will always beat an auto programm. Having said that, I do love the pcitures, the sunset ones and the shot with the approach lights especially. Last time I visited Ramstein was around operation Desert Storm, just a couple of days after a C5 crashed on approach. I really should visit again some day soon.

hello Patrick van Stiphout.

I am intrested in the last picture from the C-17 in flight heading over the city.
My question is what place the picture was taken.
In the summer I will also go for a hole week.
I would also like to know what type of lens is used.

I would love to see more Exif info on every picture in this forum. Shutterspeed, Aperture, ISO, especially for starting spotters it would be usefull to see how the picture was made.

That shot is probably taken from the Bismarck Turm. See spot 7 of the Scramble airfieldguide.

Hello Roy, Smokey and FAB,

Thanks for the comments.

The picture was indeed taken from the Bismark tower in the evening. It is taken with a 300mm 2.8 lens.
This pic and the other two sunset C-17's are taken with a 6mp Minolta 7D.
All other pics are taken with a 11mp Sony A700.
I put all the requested data above the pics.

All pics are RAW, taken with 2.8 lenses and AWB (automatic white balance). Maybe that setting is the reason for the quality of my pics.
I wanted to try a whitefilter but that is not made for a A700 :?.

I hope you have tips on my settings (or just use the 7D....).

1st. : Nice shots!

Maybe something you can play around with: I always use Lightroom to edit my RAW shots.
The (now built-in) addon from PS is kinda annoying, imo Lightroom uses a better way to preview and edit the images.

If you have these kind of conditions (like e.g. a sunset), try to set your WB to custom.
(Process of taking a picture of a white piece of paper on the location, and tell your camera that it should interpret that as white). Maybe that helps?

Good luck..
