Air Show Pilot Seriously Injured: Official 1:03pm Sep 24, 2010

A Super Decathlon plane crashed in the middle of an aerobatic demonstration at the 2010 Bandung Air Show at Husein Sastranegara Airport on Friday.

According to Metro TV, the plane caught fire immediately after crashing. The pilot, Alexander Supeli, a senior pilot with more than 2,000 hours of flight experience, survived the crash and was rushed to Salamun Hospital.

Speaking on television, a fellow pilot named Saleh who claimed he knew Supeli said the plane appeared to be flying too low, with one of its wings brushing the ground while performing a maneuver.

“Pak Alex was flying too low. I believe it was a human error because the plane was in good condition. It's only 14 years old,” Saleh said.

Super Decathlon planes are light, two seat planes primarily used for flight training and aerobatic exercises.

“The crash took place at 10:15 a.m.,” he wrote.

The Bandung Air Show is being held to commemorate the city's bicentennial on Saturday. The event began on Thursday and is scheduled to end Sunday.
