Recently I stayed a few days in Madrid. My flight, KL1703, arrived about one hour late. The delay was caused by runway limitations due to stormy weather in the Netherlands. PH-BXL landed on 18L and arrived at terminal 3. After leaving the aircraft I decided to stay airside and spot from there. After 2,5 hours my brother and a friend came in on KL1705. From the terminal building we walked in just over ten minutes to our accommodation, Hotel Ibis Madrid Aeropuerto Barajas.

The next day I returned to the airport while my travel companions headed for the city. Spotting was done from a hallway inside terminal 2, where a couple of large windows provided a decent view over part of the airport. In the five hours that I stayed there out of twenty Iberia A340-600’s I didn’t spot a single one. The new runways and terminals that have been constructed since my last visit in 2003 sure have their disadvantages. At least I was able to admire three aircraft in retro colour schemes. If anyone knows which Emirates A340-300 landed around 13:30 on 33R, I would like to hear it.

Today I visited the airport twice, for almost three hours in the morning and 1,5 in the afternoon. At the moment I am still looking for three registrations, namely an American Airlines Boeing 767 that touched down on 33L at approximately 10:15, a Saga Airlines Boeing 737 that landed on 33R around 11:25 and an Aeromexico Boeing 777 in the new colour scheme that arrived on 33L around lunch time. From my hotel room I could see the one mentioned last landing in the distance.

After an early breakfast I took my last walk from our hotel to the airport. The first 3,5 hours I spotted from the earlier mentioned corridor, then I went through security and resumed spotting airside. Our return flight, KL1702, was again about one hour late. Thanks to the delay I could write down an Air Memphis A320 and an Egyptair B737. The registration of the American Airlines B757 that landed shortly after 08:00 remains a mystery to me. My days at Madrid yielded a total of seventeen Iberia A340’s, consisting of eleven -300’s and six -600’s, not as much as I had hoped for. On the other hand, I logged far more aircraft of low cost airlines than anticipated. In approximately eighteen hours 36 of Ryanair and 28 of easyJet.
