Japan’s Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF) is to get 40 locally-produced Sikorsky UH-60J search and rescue helicopters.
Gary Parsons - 9-Dec-2010
December 9: Japan’s Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF) is to get 40 locally-produced Sikorsky UH-60J search and rescue helicopters to replace its existing fleet of the same type.
The helicopters will be produced under licence from Sikorsky by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries’ (MHI) over the next 20 years at an estimated cost of ¥190 billion (€1.7 billion), replacing the existing fleet on a one-by-one basis.
A removable aerial refuelling probe is among the principal improvements developed by MHI for the upgraded UH-60J helicopter together with satellite communications and a collision avoidance system.
Since 1991 the JASDF has operated 41 UH-60Js with one lost on December 2, 1994.
MHI has built 226 Sikorsky H-60 series aircraft under license with Sikorsky for exclusive use by the Japan Ministry of Defense since 1988 including the
UH-60JA helicopter for ground forces utility operations and the SH-60J/K anti-submarine patrol helicopter.
