KL 23 to IAH,"snow" takeoff 27 with Captain E.vanV.

Post by Valk10 »

Last friday my friend, captain E.van V.,should depart to IAH "George Bush". The scheduled departure was 10.40AM.
At 11.05 there was endly the pushback. An half hour later he entered the de-icing apron. Te de-icing from the KL23,at the flightplan the callsign was KL661, started
hopefully.
But Schiphol would be closed at 11.55. So the enigines were shut down. There was left 900kg of fuel for taxi to the runway. Otherwise there should be a short by flying to Houston.

At that moment I was still standing in the snow at the head of runway 24. Early in the morning I went to Schiphol by train. After arriving at Schiphol Airport I waited for the call of the captain.
I did'nt know which runway was on his flightplan. At that moment the runway in use changed several times,so I decided to wait.

At 13.30 I went to Plaza to have a warm cup of coffee, and hoping the KL 23 should depart at 27.
Then I got the call that the second de-icing was started and he would takeoff at the 27. I was already on my way. With the bus to P40 and a long walk in the snow to the runway.

Endly there was the takeoff at 14.55PM.
After his sign with the lights, and checking everything including full flaps,he turned on at the runway.

There started a very special moment for me. It was the crown at the day for waiting 5 long hours in the snow!

He greeted me by his takeoff call to the tower.
The captain answered to the tower with the following;

Cleared for takeoff, remaining to you and one for Bokito.

And that is one of my most used nickname. How wonderfull.
What a fantasic experience.

Hello (bokito),

A very nice moment you got there and i'll say it was true worth it to wait for it even when it takes 5 hours or more, to me aviation is also a special thing.
There are many moments you'll never forget, this is one for you.

As a aircraft mechanic on the KL heavies, its always a pleasure to watch them taking it to the sky, so i does for the ''Fox Tango''
A great video.

Thanx. It was worth to it. The captain asked me,after arriving Houston,to make the compilation also special for everyone who works at and around Schiphol.

That's correct. I had the umbrella in my neck and under my jacket to keep the hands free to videograph.

By watching from the traffic jam behind you. At least the movements on 27 gave us all something to watch! :))

My friend Capt.Erwin makes his last flights before retirement.
Last sunday evening I did film him by takeoff at RW36L.
This was flight KL 891 AMS-CTU. The takeoff was around 21.39hrs.

Yesterday he came back with return-flight KL892 , CTU-AMS.
He landed at runway 18C at 18.43hrs.

I quote Erwin (Capt.) ;

I took the take-off at Amsterdam and the landing in Chengdu.

The co-pilot had the return flight as Pilot Flying and should have made the landing in Amsterdam. However knowing "Bokito" would try to make a film, he gave me the honour.

At first the landing was planned on RW36R , later RW27 and eventually we got a D-ATIS message stating RW18R or 18C.

One hour before landing we contacted SPL app and made a deal about the Runway.

With a Satcom telephone to Ralph’s mobile we were able to direct him to 18C.

Landing conditions: 270/14, Cavok, 18°C. Landing Flaps 25, and Idle Reverse after landing due Noise Abatement regulations at SPL.

Thanks Ralph.

Erwin (Cpt)
