Kerkyra (Corfu) (LGKR-CFU) - 2010 CIV

Post by SPL »

Hello then,

some things seen on Corfu Airport. Seen while 1) upon arrival, 2) one morning at the fence and 3) with the departure. Traffic is quit slow, while the Mondays and Fridays are the busiest, that's because of the loads of British Tourists coming in (although not seen or heard on the Island). Normal landings on the 35, but while I was there the Friday morning, landings were almost all on the 17 runway. When landing or departing on the 17, all trafic on the nearby road will stopped by Airport Authorities. Landing and departing via the 35 gives nice effects on the water. I was standing on the DAM, just in front of the runway, very close and very impressive to see. No militair traffic was seen. In the weekend, quit some more bizz-aircrafts. Note that I'm not a spotter, I find it just interesting to see, so maybe some things are not correct.

Still, a nice list. Things get a lot more busy there when the season really kicks off. Good to see you had a good time there! When you go there again -which I can recommend- check the Twin Otter floatplanes in Gouvia Marina (just down the road to the north of Corfu town) and try the terrace of the Hotel Royal on the hill near the 35 threshold. It is reachable by bus (line 2 when I was there) from Corfu town. In the morning you have the sun in your back, you can sit in the shade and enjoy whatever cold drink you fancy and take pictures from above of the aircraft landing/taking off. Awesome site and sight indeed.

Hello Frank,

I stayed in Gouvia and haven't seen any floatplanes :? . Maybe I just missed them, but also didn't saw them in the Harbor, although I was not looking for them. The treshhold of the 35 runway is indeed interesting. Also on the other side of the threshold of the 35 is a restaurant/bar with good fews. Expect the Monday's and Friday's, traffic is slow. With mostly only Aegean Airlines and Olympic Airlines on the flights to Athens. But nevertheless very nice island with a very nice airport.

Hi,

I have a question about spotting at Corfu. How about police / local authorities? I thought they did not like spotters in Greece. Can you take pictures without any problems??? Or do you have to be very cautious?

Thanks.

Hello Ramon,

when I was there last summer (1 morning and 1 afternoon) no problem at all. We were at the damm and there were more spotters. Also a restaurant on the hill nearby, promots itself as spotter restaurant with info about airplanes coming and going. Off course this is no guarantee for you, but this was me experience.
