US F-15E down in Libya

Post by Thermal »

According to the Telegraph a US F-15E crashed in Libya, pilot rescued by opposition forces. Condition of the WSO is not mentioned.
Apparently it was not shot down, reason was a technical problem.

F-15E crash in Libya

Post by Argus 01 »

On NRC.NL:

This morning a USAF F-15E is crashed in Libya. Aircrew made a safe eject and have minor injuries.
Reason of the crash is still unknown. A spokesman of the US Africa Command won't say who helps the pilot's get out of the country, but the rescue operation is going on.

Pentagon declared that the aircraft crashed due to a technical failure and wasn't shot down.

Since crashes don't happen that often I have my doubts about this explanation...

At the risc of starting a new topic: the footage shows a burned plane which impacted the ground with minimal horizontal velocity and more or less flat (horizontal). The top of the tail seem to be broken of on impact, so do the wings. The front fuselage is completely flat (burned and/or smashed on impact) but is is still there. The damage is consistent with a flat spin. Remember that the F-15's were grounded lately for mechanical problems (they broke up) so it's not that canot have these problems.
