RAF Tornado F3: over the years..

Post by Macc »

I always did prefer the Tornado F3 to the Tornado GR4, so it was always great to see them when I got the chance..

3. By the time I was interested in aviation, 11(F)sqn had gone; XXV(F)sqn were the first I saw go..

5. After commemorating 11(F)sqn disbandment, ZE887 moved on to XXV(F)sqn to commemorate their disbandment before doing the same with 43(F)sqn becoming GF. It is now present, preserved at RAF Museum Hendon.

6. 41(R)sqn often operated 2/3 Tornado F3 and these were occasionally seen on exercise; one here taking part at RAF Waddington during Indra Dhanush.

7. 56(R)sqn were next to go after XXV(F)sqn..

8. Burners blazing, almost a year after XXV(F)sqn disbandment, FO retained squadron markings whilst operating with 43(R)sqn and was not the only one.

15. As I explained earlier, ZE887 under the final leg of its squadron disbandment tour. After 11(F) and 25(F) it is seen here departing Waddington with 43(R) after taking part in the 2008 role demo.

30. Later returning from #28 sortie with the hook down. Unfortunately the first time I decided to try get banking shots lured me away from the airfield so I didn't get to see it engaging the wire..

31. One of the few 56(R)sqn shots I ever took that stood out. More surprisingly, it was taken with my old Panasonic Lumix FZ7..

32. Purposefully left to last. HF was the last Tornado F3 I saw fly. Sporting the JU-L Battle of Britain tailcode and operating with JU that day. It returned in late winter sunshine - a fitting finish.

Gonna miss them.
Hope you enjoy,
Chris.
