LOG 5 october 2011:

After arrival I speeded towards Fort Worth for some afternoon action. Just before arriving at spot 8, at the north, I noted the RMAF Viper landing..damn...too late.
I also noted a long line up of TX vipers on the runway so some action was still forthcoming.

Looking at Google Earth, you can see the X-35B dumped at the north, together with two F-16s. I did see one F-16 close to the X-35B.
However I can not find any details of this aircraft. Is it only a hull, with no registration?

Nightflying was performed by the Vipers, afterwards I left.

Hi Piet,

About the dumped F-35B...the white/ light grey coloured one behind the F-16 80-0550? It has something in red written on the tail but I can't read it from my picture. However if I take a look at the nose gear it seems to be built out of a few simple but sturdy struts which make me think it is a static rig ...maybe for engine testing ?

Best regards,

Indeed I did some research about this frame, here at home in my library and computer.
Looking at Google Earth you wil clearly see the construction for the lift fan.
In 1995-1996 LMTAS did some research with the Full Scale Powered Model.
It looked like this:

Image

According World Air Power, the canards were removed at a later stage and the elevators added.

Myth Busted.

Next to it, below some silver-grey sheets is the hull of the cancelled A-12 Avenger BTW.

Must have been that one indeed. Only a little bit more faded bleu-ish cockpit and grey c/s. The red lettering is probably NASA.
