JN-4D in EAA Airventure museum, Oshkosh

Post by Antheii »

Hi,

Although I'm not an expert on the Curtiss JN (aka Jenny), I do have some question marks on the real identity of the frame on display in the EAA AirVenture museum at Oshkosh, said to be a JN-4D with c/n 4904.

The aircraft itself wears markings with this c/n 4904. And this seems to be the generally accepted version.

But on the museums Master Aircraft Collection List, the (former) civil registration is given as N5357.
When checking this N5357 in the online FAA database, the c/n is given as 11741.

My first thought was that either 4904 or 11741 probably is its former USAAS registration - which is quit common with the FAA for former military aircraft.
But when I checked Joe Baughers site, 11741 is in a batch of cancelled Martinsyde F-3's, while 4904 was a Standard SJ-1 - and although the latter is very much a look-a-like of the Curtiss JN-series, I would be surprised when the EAA guys would make such a mistake.

But to make things even more complicate Skytamer states the ID as N2525. When this is it's (former) civil registration, according to the Golden Years website, this is (again!) a Standard aircraft.... (although unfortunately no c/n is given).

Any expert out there who knows the truth? - maybe 4904 really is it's c/n (and all other reference's incorrect?), but my habit of cross-checking this time made me doubt a bit... :-)
