REQ.: 9 Lightnings over The Netherlands in 1986 or 1988

Post by Withnail »

Hello all,

I'm looking for the serials of the nine Lightnings F6 that flew over The Netherlands in 1986 or 1988. If someone knows the exact date they did this I'd be very thankful.

Cheers,

Gerrit

I think your request is bit unspecific.

9 Lightning F6s?
I guess that does not refer to the 7 (5x F6 and 2x T5: XR725/BA, XR753/BP, XR759/BJ, XS419/DV, XS452/BT, XS898/BM, XS919/BB) seen at Soesterberg on 04DEC1986.

Regards,
Gerard

I know I'm a bit unspecific. This is just from my memory about 25 years later. could be I've seen these seven. In my mind there were nine, but my mind could be playing tricks with me. From which unit were these Lightnings at Soesterberg?

I think there was also a rotation of one of the Lightning squadrons with 316 Sqn at Gilze somewhere in the late-80's?

That was 5 sq in May 1985. Soesterberg was November 1986 with 11 sq.

I can not recall a moment when 9 Lightnings overflew the Netherlands in the late eighties. I guess (not sure) that I would remember, since it would have been a rare event.

Slightly off topic, I do remember a piece written by a reader in the local Nieuwsblad van het Noorden complaining about the Soviet MiG.21's that roamed unattended across Friesland. The guy must have seen the Lightnings and mistaken them for Fishbeds! That must have been Polecat's rotation above.
Speaking of having heard the milk slushing but having no idea of the udder's location 8)

The squadron-rotation under the name of "5 Sq The last of the few"
I do not know exactly when it started and ended, this is what mine MilReg database says:

Gilze & Rijen 1985, 14th until 24th of may:
XR757/AL Lightning F6 5Sq Darkgrey c/s
XR758/AH Lightning F6 5Sq
XS898/AK Lightning F6 5Sq
XS903/AM Lightning F6 5Sq Grey c/s

5 Sq and LTF stopped flying in 1987
11 Sq stopped flying in 1988
