South Korean T-50s to be based in Beja, Portugal ??

Post by ehusmann »

From a Portuguese website: http://www.dn.pt/inicio/portugal/interi ... id=2145229

The article mentions that the South Korean and Portuguese governments are investigating the option of opening a flight school for South Korean pilots in Beja, Portugal. The development of a civil airport in Beja has failed, so they are looking for new ways of using the airbase. The idea involves 25 T-50s to be based in Beja. At the moment these are still ideas, but later this month a South Korean delagation should visit Portugal to discuss it further. No further timeline is given.

Evaluation should end in March, then hopefuly we'll see a decision. This subject has nothing to do with the civil terminal at Beja AB, or wether it's profitable or not. Acording to the news, Talavera AB in Spain was the koreans first choice but negotiations with the Spanish government were unsuccessful. Beja is a huge air base (to Portuguese standards) and has plenty of empty space. The korean military would occupy the facilities once used by Luftwaffe untill 1993 (including the "Officer's neighborhoud" in Beja city for them and their families).
