The Lockheed SC-130J Sea Herc

Post by Stratofreighter »

Apart from that "new" F-16 variant also this interesting proposal:

SINGAPORE — Lockheed Martin announced plans at the 2012 Singapore Airshow to create two C-130J variants.

The C-130XJ offers the U.S. domestic and international markets a variant that does not feature all the capabilities inherent in the C-130J, thus providing a significantly lower price.

The SC-130J Sea Herc will offer an affordable replacement for the P-3 Orion maritime patrol aircraft (MPA) and anti-submarine warfare aircraft (ASW), Standridge said.

The new variant will provide a wide spectrum of MPA and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance mission capabilities using roll on/roll off systems. The patrol radius and endurance is on par with the P-3, but it features a new airframe and updated ASW systems. The variant also saves costs by leveraging existing C-130J fleet infrastructure, support system, spares and training, he said.

An artist’s conception provided by Lockheed of the Sea Herc shows it firing a missile from a hardpoint under the wing.
In a separate development, Lockheed Martin has turned the P-3’s mission systems into a roll-on, roll-off solution that can be installed into C-130s.
The C-130 roll-on, roll-off mission system for maritime surveillance has been around for some years already.
But Lockheed Martin how now developed a roll-on, roll-off solution that allows one to effectively install the P-3’s anti-submarine warfare mission system and other equipment, such as sonar buoys, onto the C-130.

Apart from South Korea and the Lockheed S-3 Viking (South Korea asked information about them themselves :!: , see http://forum.scramble.nl/viewtopic.php?f=48&t=100393 ) ,

Lockheed is now also trying to flog the SC-130J Sea Hercules to Singapore according to
http://www.janes.com/article/29014/adex ... r-sea-herc
The Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) could adopt the Lockheed Martin SC-130J Sea Herc in fulfilment of its long-range maritime patrol aircraft (MPA) requirement, a company official told IHS Jane's on 29 October.

Speaking at the Seoul International Aerospace and Defence Exhibition (ADEX) in South Korea, Steve Pigott, Director Business Development International Air Mobility Programs, said that Singapore represents the most promising near-term prospect for the MPA-variant Hercules as it looks to augment and later replace its current Fokker 50 MPA fleet.

"Singapore has a real need [for a long-range MPA], and we could provide both a Level 2 [anti-surface warfare] or Level 3 [anti-submarine warfare] capability with the SC-130J," he said.

The RSAF currently operates five Fokker 50s in the MPA role, which are due to remain in service until at least 2020.

However, the continued threat of piracy in the region and increased use of submarines has prompted Singapore to expand its MPA and anti-submarine warfare (ASW) capabilities with an improved platform to enter service in the 2015 timeframe.

First unveiled at the Singapore Airshow in 2012, the SC-130J offers a roll-on, roll-off (ro/ro) MPA and ASW capability that utilises a palletised version of the Lockheed P-3 Orion mission suite.

As the RSAF already operates 10 C-130 transport aircraft, the SC-130J would enable the service to take advantage of a common operating, training, and support infrastructure.
