When visiting this show please keep in mind that the trafficjam around the field is massive!! It took me a lot of time to get on the base in the morning. Allthough there are different ways to approach this field, I do not think that there is quick way to get on the base. I was there in the morning only, maybe it gets better in the afternoon.
The static was parked on the 15L - 33R runway. When I arrived the Ch-53's and S-65 used the 33L for take off clear in sight of the car park that uses the other half of the runway at the static end. Unfortunetaly the F-15's used rwy 18 to take off, the came back just after the take off in a 3 ship formation and made a nice break over the airfield.
After that I went on photographing the static and was suddenly surprised by 3 Hercs in formation flying low over our runway. I knew that there was a fly by that day but wasn't sure that it was going to be visible from the show so I thought that these 3 were only on their way from Nevatim to that fly by somewhere else. Probably on their way or something. But then some time later also suddenly the 707 showed up with the 3 Eagles behind it. Also straight down the runway at lowlevel heading north!
Gazing in the distance to the view of those four smoketrails disappearing with the Eagles behind it and also the two five ship formations of Vipers appeared. Both more offset to the runway but also twice as high making it better to photograph and read the serials.
The four T-6's showed up a couple of minutes later to give a show!
At that moment I was tapped on my shoulder by a female security gaurd saying that I wasn't allowed to make pictures with such a camera! I guess that, by now I had a telelens, making pictures with a lot of mm's is a problem for them. I was there for an hour shooting the static, clear in view of security gaurds and military personnel. No problems there.
As I was allready leaving for my car I head no problems with that, I was done there and supposed to be heading south for the Ovda open day.
It was also not a problem to get on the base being a foreigner. At the check point the pulled me with my car to the side and two soldiers stepped up;
"show me your passport"
Which I offcourse did
"so where are you from?"
The Netherlands, I answered
"Oh cool, my grandmother is from the Netherlands", one of the soldiers answered
"and your name is?"
Arjan
"okay, have fun here today! "
This was the entire security check, I could only wish it was that simple on Ben Gurion!
