Hi,

Very sad news update:

--------------------

This just on the MoD website now:

Group Captain Ian Gale, Station Commander RAF Lossiemouth, has made the following statement:

"Following the incident involving two of our Tornado GR4 aircraft in the Moray Firth yesterday, it is with great sadness that I must confirm the death of one of the crew members, an officer from 15 (Reserve) Squadron, based here at RAF Lossiemouth.

"A second crew member remains under medical care, where he is in a serious but stable condition.

"Two additional personnel remain unaccounted for. Due to extremely poor weather conditions in the area, the RAF and Her Majesty's Coastguard have made a joint decision not to resume search and rescue operations.

"The operation will be resumed as a recovery operation as soon as possible, but we must be realistic: given the length of time that has elapsed since the accident, there is no expectation of recovering missing personnel alive.

"The Royal Air Force is in contact with the next of kin of all those involved. As I am sure you will understand, they have asked for a period of time to take in the news and inform extended family members before further details are released. The Royal Air Force intend to respect this and I would ask the media to do likewise.

"Clearly, this incident will be subject to full investigation, and a Service Inquiry will be led by the Military Aviation Authority. It is important that we establish the facts of what happened and it is vital that the investigation is allowed to take its course.

An update on the missing aircrew
The RAF has confirmed that the remains of Flight Lieutenant Adam Sanders have been recovered from the Moray Firth and formally identified.

The RAF made the following statement:

"The RAF can confirm that the remains of Flight Lieutenant Adam Sanders have been recovered from the area of the Tornado accident in the Moray Firth. Formal identification has been completed and the next of kin have been informed.

"Additional remains have also been recovered and are in the process of being formally identified. Our thoughts and prayers remain with the next of kin of the aircrew involved in the accident at this very difficult time.

"The next of kin of the aircrew involved in this tragic incident and all at RAF Lossiemouth are very grateful for the tremendous show of public support that has been evident since.

"We appeal to the media to continue to give families and friends privacy and the space to grieve over the coming days and weeks, as they begin to come to terms with their loss."

The Military Aviation Authority stated:

"The recovery of wreckage has now been completed and the Service Inquiry Panel, assisted by the Military Air Accident Investigation Branch, will continue to work quickly and thoroughly to investigate the circumstances of the accident."

Another update on the MOD website
The RAF has confirmed that the remains of Squadron Leader Samuel Bailey have been recovered from the Moray Firth and formally identified.

The RAF has made the following statement:

"The RAF can confirm that the remains of Squadron Leader Sam Bailey have been formally identified and the next of kin informed. Our thoughts and prayers remain with them at this very difficult time.

"The offshore wreckage recovery operation involving the Far Sapphire, and the comprehensive examination of the incident site has been completed.

"However, the search for any further items that may have been carried away from the crash site by the tide will continue along the coastline with members of the local police, the Coastguard and the RAF Mountain Rescue Team. Every effort is being made to recover as much as possible.

"The next of kin of the aircrew involved in this tragic incident, and all at RAF Lossiemouth, are very grateful for the tremendous show of public support that has been evident.

"We appeal to the media to continue to give families and friends privacy and the space to grieve over the coming days and weeks, as they begin to come to terms with their loss."
