Hi,
If you're asking about the NATO Days (
http://www.dny-nato.cz/index.php?lang=en): I think this event is definitely worth a visit, although the 2012 programme is yet unknown, of course.
The static display has been very strong in recent years, and hopefully that will continue in 2012. As far as the dynamic display is concerned: the situation is somewhat unique in Ostrava, since the axis of the display is perpendicular to the runway. These maps will give you a general idea of what the place looks like:

I think the crowdline is rather far from the displays (although it was a lot closer in 2011 than in 2010) - however, if you exit the base towards the village of Albrechtičky (through gate no. 2 on the first map, near the VIP parking), you will be able to stay right under the flying displays on the nearby agricultural area (which is a bit scary sometimes, but for me, the experience is clearly worth it). A video taken by myself in 2011:

Regarding the position of the sun, I think Ostrava is not the best venue, but it's not too bad either. To be honest, I don't remember the details, since I don't usually take photos.
You'll find plenty of accomodation in Ostrava, some 20-25 km from the airport. If you book your room early enough, probably closer than that.
About the airports: the venue of the show is in fact a commercial airport, although I think mostly charters tend to use it (not sure, so you have to check out their site:
http://www.airport-ostrava.cz/en/). I don't know exactly where you are travelling from, and I don't have first hand experience, since I always travel to Ostrava by car, but I think you should check out flights to the Prague, Bratislava or Krakow airports.
