Saab 39 Gripen Offers

Brazil has become much more interested in Gripen again. Earlier was a order close for Rafale, but Gripen has sailed up again. The Brazil military has Gripen as number 1. Brazil decide to buy 36 planes 2013.

Other countries in South America is very interested. Eddy de la Motte don´t say who to Reuters (export chief). Key order is the Brazils.

The French don´t use fair play (Svenska Dagbladet).

Saab hope that Thailand buy further Gripen.

Saab has offered 22 Gripen to Switzerland.

Malaysia are also interested.

As other countries more "to the east in Asia".

In Europe are discussions with Denmark, Holland, Croatia, Slovenia, Rumania and Bulgaria.

The problem with F-35 JSF is certainly the price.

However much I would like to see more Gripen orders, very few of above 'discussions' will become an order I am afraid.
Brazil - has ordered Rafale already, but they do have a history of flying more types at the same time. With the economy still rising they might be a candidate.
Thailand - maybe
Malaysia - I doubt it
Holland - no real chance. The discussion now seems more to be 'something' or 'nothing'. If something will be ordered it will be the JSF.
Denmark - I see the JSF here as well, to stay in cooperation with other NATO countries (Norway and Holland mostly)
Croatia - it seems they are going for the Gripen
Slovenia - I don't see this happening. No money and no current jet fleet.
Romania - they will go for second hand F-16s. Already buying former Portuguese and I expect them to shop for more before buying any real new jets
Bulgaria - will probably take the same route as the Romanians and go for (ex-USAF) F-16s.
Switzerland - has ordered the Gripen, if the order remains in place...

The Gripen seems to be what the F-5 was in its days: the cheap option for countries wanting to have some fighter capability. The only problem is these days, a 'cheap' option isn't cheap anymore. Much more than small orders like the Swiss (with 22 you could call it large already), Czech, Hungarian and now apparantly the Croatian are very unlikely in my opinion.

My source is the export chief through Reuters and his job is to be positive.

I have taken the information from the Svenska Dagbladet, a Swedish rightwing morningpaper.

I am shure every defence today have problem with escalating costs and dividing between army, navy and air force.

An F-35 and F-22 cost a lot of many, as Rafale and Eurofighter. Still Gripen cost a lot of money to invest and operate.
But the difference is huge.

The operating costs with F-35, as Rafale and Eurofighter. It takes a lot of time to reload them after a mission and prepare them for a new.

Actually... the Gripen NG and F/A-18E are the frontrunners in Denmark, so likely one of them will finally get a order. In Latin Americas; both Argentina and Colombia have been officialy offered Gripens and in the case of Argentina, they actually had sent two pilots last year to fly the Gripen in Sweden. Also, a Colombian delegation had been visiting the factory last year... although no idea if those were civilians or military officials.

I am pretty sure, that more nations will come to have the Gripen ordered.
Time will tell.

Brazil; after all aircraft have been evaluated, the AF itself prefferd the Gripen above the Rafale, it was the Government who was looking for the Rafale.... so if the choice was made by proffesionals, it would be the Gripen.

Personaly I think the Gripen will be the next fighter in Brazil

Now that´s interesting... As a Dane living in Denmark, it is my understanding from the general and expert media, that JSF is the likely winner.

I do not agree!
I visited Skrydstrup in may 2012 and Danish officials said that the JSF is still the choice of the Air Force, what the politicians will decide is unclear, just like in the Netherlands...

Denmark is a level 3 partner in the JSF program. They won't do that when they have the intention to opt for another type. I think it is the same as in Holland, commiting to the program, but trying to get some room for negotiations by setting up a tender.

Well, there is a difference in what Air Force wants and what politicians wants.... as far as I know, nothing is sure that JSF will ever come to Holland! What I understood from Danish spotters is that there are still contenders bidding (including Gripen NG).

Time will tell....

On the same youtube page you see an Eurofighter visiting Pleso. So you can state the same interest in Eurofighters. My guess is that Croatia will probably do the same as Romania, buying surplus F-16s from another Nato country.
