First was flying from Lisbon to Newark on TAP. Just when we reached our gate an exotic visitor in the form of an UAE AF C-17 taxied out. No idea what it did here.... but welcome at any time of course.

C-17A UAE AF 1227 ATR.42F Swift Air EC-IVP Ce.650 OE-GLSThe hotels in New York proved to be exceptionally expensive this time, so we decided to stay around Newark airport. The Newark Airport Crowne Plaza it was and that was not a bad spotting hotel either. We had a room on the 7th floor (out of 11) with an airport view. From here you have a good view on the express cargo area (Fedex, UPS) and on terminal C. Departing and arriving traffic is doable, but not everything can be read, mostly depending on where it turns of. Nevertheless, I finally managed to get a good number of planes during three days (well, part of it, each day about 2 hours).
For those who want to know; the location of the hotel is 40.678699, -74.194074. Next to it is a Econolodge which undoubtedly is cheaper, but it has only two floors and will not have any views on the airport.

Since it was raining and we didn't feel like spending much time in Providence, a short stop at Quonset Point was added to the schedule. Unfortunately we arrived only at 2.58PM at the museum, which closes at 3pm....but already there wasn't a single person to be found. So only the planes outside could be logged which are not too many.
The USMC Phantom was in pieces and partly hidden. I could only make out the Marines titles, nothing else, not even squadron markings. Unfortunately, the museum supposedly has two of these.... anybody who might know which one it should be?
The two choppers at the RI NG buildings can be seen from the small civil terminal (continue on the road from the museum) and have been placed here very recently. Google Earth doesn't show them yet, on an image from April 2012.

The only real planned spotting stop was to be at Schenectady. Both the museum here and the based LC-130 as well as the very close proximity to our planned tour made it worth a short detour. Unfortunately.... this museum was also closed. During autumn and winter it is closed on Tuesday and Wednesday. However, this does not matter for number freaks like me, everything is outside and clearly visible. The Scimitar, Skyknight and MiG-15 are very recent additions and come from the Intrepid in New York (which also was the previous home for the Tracker).
The based Hercs can be read from the museum (front row) and from the civil terminal (back row). The NASA Be.200 at the civil terminal was a very welcome addition obviously.

The appalling weather made us drop that plan however. Back up plan was to see if we could visit the OCC shop (you know, those loud mouth bike builders from television). As it turned out, their shop is literally next door to the gate of Stewart Field, home to a bunch of C-17s (having replaced the Galaxies since last year) and another bunch of Hercules. So after a row of choppers without serials, it was also possible to do three rows of cargo haulers, with serials! To read the serials just pass the gate and stop at the second street on the right (Fletcher Dr). Walking back a forth a little bit will get you everything.
