An Air National Guard F-16C fighter jet from Fresno crashed during a routine training mission over the Owens Valley about 100 miles east of Fresno Thursday afternoon, the California National Guard said.
The pilot, who was not identified, safely ejected and was transported to a local military facility for an evaluation, Senior Master Sgt. Christopher Drudge said.
The pilot is a member of the California Air National Guard's 144th Fighter Wing based in Fresno, Drudge said.
The jet was flying between 12,000 and 15,000 feet when an in-flight emergency happened about 3:35 p.m.
The F-16C fighter crashed about 15 miles south of Lone Pine, in a remote area of Inyo County, and there are no known civilian injuries, Drudge said. The jet was built in 1986 at a cost of $21 million.
The cause of the emergency is still under investigation. No other details were immediately available.
