Two dead in Chilean Air Force crash

Friday, 15 March 2013 15:17

Pilot and mechanic from aerobatic squadron suffer fatal injuries in Quintero region.

Two members of the Chilean Air Force (FACh) were killed when their plane crashed Friday morning.

The two men were carrying out a routine flight as part of their duties for the aerobatic “Falcons” squadron.

The incident occurred at about 10:30 a.m. at the Quintero Air Base, 70 miles northeast of Santiago.
The crash occurred in an Extra 300L aircraft, a two-seat aerobatic plane.

The FACh confirmed the death of Capt. Eduardo Varas de la Fuente and mechanic Cristian Garcia.
Both men were pronounced dead at the scene.

This is not the first accident involving Varas.
In 2009 he was forced to make an emergency landing in a vacant lot south of Santiago during a training exercise.
The then-lieutenant incurred head injuries, a collapsed lung, lower back injuries and a fractured forearm.

According to FACh representatives, the causes of the crash are unknown and a full inquiry into the incident has been launched by the Aviation Investigations Office in Santiago.
