Today, on Friday, due to low cloud base of 1200 feet, the field was IFR and all aircraft had to make an ILS approach.Weather and dominance.
a. To indicate whether an instrument approach is mandatory or not, the system of 'Airfield
IFR/VFR‟ is used.
b. 'Airfield IFR' is used when the weather in the CTR does not permit aircraft to fly
visual circuits. The weather minima for VFR-circuits are 5 km visibility and 1500 ft
cloudbase. Cloudbase is defined as coverage of 3/8 or more. If conditions are below
these minima, aircraft can be cleared 'special VFR' (SVFR). The weather minima for
SVFR-circuits are 3 km visibility, clear of clouds and the cloudbase above 1200 ft.
SVFR-traffic, which is not in the overhead pattern, will be monitored by RAPCON North.
During night-flying, weather permitting, traffic in the CTR is allowed to fly VFR (see
Annex B 9.2.5.c). VFR-flights for RNLAF aircraft are in accordance with LVV D3.
c. In general, 'Airfield IFR/VFR' also indicates which traffic has priority in handling.
d. To prepare for a visual or an instrument approach pilots are to contact RAPCON North in
sufficient time to ascertain whether the airfield is IFR, SVFR or VFR. RAPCON North is
to keep AOCS NM ATC and Vlieland Range informed of the airfield status.
e. When the airfield status was VFR on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday,
IFRprocedures on Friday are mandatory. When the actual weather conditions should
indicate „Airfield VFR‟, the status 'Airfield Oscar‟ will be used and „O‟ will indicate the
airfield status in ATSAL. When the airfield status was IFR on one of the prementioned
days the normal system of IFR/ VFR will be used.
