Spotting at Creta: Souda + Kasteli

Post by Tigerspoon »

Hi there
i am looking for some information about spotting at Creta. I will be in the area around Souda and Kasteli for the for approx. 1 week, and i am looking forward to take a visit to those bases. I'm also looking forward to take some pictures of the airplanes.
Is there anyone who already has been at Kasteli and Souda, being able to give some advise? Heard about that they don't like spotters at that region.
Any info + help is highly appreciated

Thx

Hi Tigerspoon!

i was at Souda in 2000 and 2006. in the eastern approach you can spot in a little valley and little hill alongside with some gipsy's and their dogs!
the road (which is a little dirt/asfalt road) is called Epar.Od. Sternon-Perivolitsas

on the southside of the field you can come to the fence, but also some watchtowers are spotting you then...maybe the towers are not manned anymore but watch out there....the exact location i don't remember but alongside the field there are some roads leading to the fence trough the fruitgardens and olivegardens...

also in the civvie terminal you may spot something across. The US part is located on the road leading to the eastern approach and that road is called Epar.Od. Moni Agias Triados-Perivolitsas, trough some bushes and trees it is possible to see some yanks...

good luck and more info i will give on request!
grtz

Hi Tigerspoon,

About Kasteli, I was there in 2001, what I can remember from a hill with a small grave yard you can overview the base. There are on regular base F-16 detachements. Heat waves can be a problem to read off. the main road along the base is an option but could be tricky.

Hope this helps.....
kind regards,

Maurits
