Syria conflict: US may leave F-16s and missiles in Jordan

The US says it will send a Patriot missile battery and F-16 fighters to Jordan for military exercises and might keep them there to help deal with the threat from the conflict in Syria.

A US official said the arms may be kept there in light of "escalating violence along Jordan's borders".

Secretary of State John Kerry said Syria was at risk of "total implosion".

Meanwhile, the UN is due to publish its latest report into human rights violations in Syria.

The report, the fifth of its kind, is widely expected to contain more evidence of atrocities amounting to war crimes and crimes against humanity.

It comes amid diplomatic efforts, led by the US and Russia, to organise peace talks later this month. So far diplomats have been unable to set a date for the meeting.

'Late'
US Department of State spokeswoman Jen Psaki said no decision had yet been made over whether to keep the missile launcher and F-16s in Jordan.

"Given our strong alliance with Jordan and in light of circumstances in the region and escalating violence along Jordan's borders, if requested some [weapons] may remain beyond the conclusion of the exercise to assist the Jordanian armed forces," she said.

It was not clear how many F-16s would be sent. Nato already positioned Patriot missile batteries near Turkey's border with Syria earlier this year.

The batteries are designed to intercept Scud missiles, but could also potentially be employed to enforce a no-fly zone.

US President Barack Obama's administration has been coming under pressure at home and abroad to take more forceful action over Syria.

Speaking of the attempt to organise a peace conference, Mr Kerry said: "This is a very difficult process, which we come to late.

"We are trying to prevent the sectarian violence from dragging Syria down into a complete and total implosion where it has broken up into enclaves and the institutions of the state have been destroyed," he said.

The conference aims to bring representatives of the government and rebel groups together to negotiate over a plan published last year that provides for a ceasefire and a transitional government.

Mr Kerry said the conference was dependent on "events on the ground and the participants themselves".

"The Unites States can push and cajole... but in the end, the people on the ground, are going to have to decide that that's something they are prepared to engage in," he said.

At least 80,000 people have been killed and 1.5 million have fled Syria since the uprising against President Bashar al-Assad's government began in 2011.

Buckley Air Force Base, Colo. - Six F-16 fighter jets from the Colorado Air National Guard along with more than 60 ground personnel took off from Buckley Air Force Base early Tuesday morning on en route to a military training exercise in Jordan.

Called "Eager Lion," the three-week deployment will be to a multi-national and a multi-service exercise, said Captain Darin Overstreet, a spokesman for the Colorado Air National Guard.

7NEWS received several phone calls, emails and Facebook messages from viewers saying they heard the sound of jets about 7 a.m.

A Denver woman told 7NEWS she and neighbors heard what sounded like several waves of jets flying overhead, but the sky was too cloudy to see the aircraft.

"It sounded a like Armageddon," the woman said laughing, adding that the racket woke her up.

And what is your source ? It's not uncommon for the FAF-units to have regular training detachements.

USAF F-16s have been deployed for exercise "Eager Lion", but will stay in Jordan after the exercise, in case of....
Concerning Adla, as says by Rene, squadrons are regularly deployed to Solenzara for live-firing training exercises.

The exercise in Jordania involve around 5000 US forces and 3000 Jordanian forces.

See
http://www.army.mil/article/104693/1st_ ... _kick_off/

Among these is the command, communications and intelligence part of the 2nd Armored Division.

Early in the Syrian conflict it was reported that "units" landed on a airbase in Jordania close to Syrian border. Involving troops is Special Forces and CIA forces (as other forces, maybee special EU forces) working from the Jordanian side. Antennas were erected according some web sides.

Interested find it on the web.

The F-16 now landing is certainly to protect the US forces on ground.

At this time, the plan is for the F-16s and Patriot Missile battery to remain in Jordan through the completion of Exercise Eager Lion. We continue to consult closely with the Government of Jordan on their security needs in light of the Syrian crisis.

If requested by the Government of Jordan, we will consider extending the deployment of the F-16s and Patriot Battery associated with Eager Lion beyond the exercise, to further develop our strong bilateral defense relationship.

Iran sources:

Jordan is to host a major military exercise with more than 15,000 soldiers from 18 countries, including the United States.

A Jordanian military official speaking on condition of anonymity stated that, besides the United States, other countries sending military personnel for the two-week "Eager Lion 2013" military exercise include Britain, Bahrain, Canada, the Czech Republic, Egypt, France, Iraq, Italy, Lebanon, Pakistan, Poland, Qatar, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Yemen, The Tehran Times reported.

The Eager Lion 12 operations are the largest recurring, annual exercise in U.S. military's Central Command and designed to strengthen military-to-military relationships.

Exercise Eager Lion 12, also in Jordan, ran May 8-30, 2012 and involved 11,000 personnel from 19 countries.

Since 2008 Jordan has received $2.4 billion in U.S. military and economic aid but its resources have become strained by the influx of refugees -- currently more than 500,000 -- fleeing civil war in neighboring Syria.
