Antalya (LTAI/AYT) - 2013 CIV

Post by Marcelb »

Spotting / photography at Antalya

I have spent the last two days taking pictures at Antalya airport. Great place for pictures. There are many spots for a decent picture although they are a bit hard to find, especially when landing are towards the north.

Antalya has three runways, 18l/36r, 18c/36c and 18r/36l. During my stay 18r/36l was not used. I could not find a pattern in runway assignment. Aircraft for terminal 1 got 18l/36r while being the one more away from the terminal. Heavies like B777 and B747 seems to use 18l/36r all the time.
In the morning aircraft land towards the north. Then around 0900 they change and land towards the south. And around 1600 they change again. Times are not fixed, i did not see a pattern here.

So with parallel runways and changes of runway direction Antalya photography can be a challenge.

I did not see any police or military at the perimeter roads. Just a few of the watchtowers are actualy manned. Not sure what happens if you take your camera out. We did not try. All the time we made sure to stay outside the view.
People especially at the southside are not used to foreigners taking photos of aircraft. And explaining our hobby is a challenge as they do not speak a single word of english. Make sure you bring an aviation magazine to explain.

A car is an absolute must and a scanner is handy as well. Not sure if a scanner is allowed so low profile again. Flightradar24 is a great help too. Another must have is the Antalya airport app. It show arrivals and departures including type of aircraft and registration.

Saturday was a very busy day. Sunday became a bit more quiet and Monday is very quiet. We were in Antalya in May 2013.

I will produce a guide with all the spots and information later. Bookmark this posting for
updates.
We stayed in the IC Airport hotel at the airport. Great location!

So if you are thinking about going to Antalys just go. I found it a great place to see many aircraft especially the Russian and former Sovjet states.

An update to my earlier posting above on Antalya.
In three days time (May 18-20 2013) we saw all the AYT regular Russian airlines. Transaero with B747 and a single Tu204 flight, many Northwind with A321, B767, B757 and B777. Ural several daily flights with A321. UT Air with B757 and B737. Orenair with B737. I-Fly with A330 and B757 daily. Windrose with A321/A320 daily.
Yamal and Kolavia one or two flights per day. Tatarstan showed up using the former A319 of Russline still in the nice red livery. Tatarstan also daily with A319 and B737.
New this year is Sunday Airlines with B757 in a nice livery. They are almost every day present at AYT. Also SCAT is present again using B757. Donavia with A319.

Air Bashkortostan comes in at least once a week on Friday using B757. Probably a VIM Airlines aircraft.

We saw two Yak42's. One of Saravia and one of South Airlines UR-CKO. This was parked all three days at the south remote apron.
There was just one Tu154 flight operated by Tatarstan. It comes several times per week.
I believe a daily flight is an Aeroflot IL96. They also sent an A330 almost daily.
Air Onix was seen once with a B737 on a Saturday
Polet comes in several times per week with an An148. I believe this is a scheduled flight.

Grozny Air operates up to 4 daily flights to AYT using the Yak42. I have seen flights listed on Thursdays and Fridays. We did not see them operate on Saturday, Sunday or Monday.
Moskovia operates a few times per week using the B737.
Investavia operates a Fokker 100 flight on at least Thursday.

The highseason has to start for the Russians I guess. We did not see Transaero B777 and Orenair B777. I am sure soon they will show up as well.

I will post a timetable in the near future.

The Grozny Air Yak42's flights last week at AYT seemed to be one-off charters. Not listed this week.
Uzbekistan Airways started with B767 at May 31 on Thursdays. Alitalia with A330 on Thusdays as well. Belle Air started the season with A320. And Aeroflot came in on Thursday with an afternoon IL96 flight. That makes two IL96 on the same day. Hope that is not an one-off either.
Sunday Airlines is seen each day here with two B757 in own colours. SCAT B737 now appears as well about once weekly.

There are very few airports in Europe which have 4 IL96 flights on a single day besides Moscow. Antalya is one of them. Saturday June 01 will see 4 IL96 of Aeroflot. Also 2 Fokker 100's (Caspiy & Bek Air). Aviatrans K for the first time with A320 and MD80. Grozny Air again with 4 Yak42 flights all from Grozny.

Sunday June 02 also has 4 IL96 flights of Aeroflot. Like Saturday two Aviatrans K flights. I believe those replace the planned Kharkiv Airlines one. Kharkiv Airlines was supposed to start this weekend with flights from Kiev and other airports in the Ukraine. Issues with delivery of B767 and B737?
Grozny Air with four Yak42 flights today. Investavia operates the Caspiy Fokker 100 from Aktau.

-Kharkiv Airlines started with flights to Antalya. Currently with a Boeing 737. Boeing 767 seems not yet delivered to Kharkiv Airlines. It looks like Aviatrans K flies for Kharkiv. This Saturday with A320.
-Aeroflot on weekdays with three IL96 flights.
-Sky Airlines suspended flights.
-Travel Services has one some days many flights
-Polet now several times per week in the morning with An148
-Alitalia and Volotea seems one off charters
-Grozny Air very irregular schedule
-Moskovia also a very irregular schedule

Saturday June 8 saw a nice Tupolev Tu-154M UP-T5406 of Kazaviaspas arriving at 23:45. Hope this is not another one off charter.

Redwings got its license back and is now flying almost every day to Antalya using the Tupolev 204.

Air Caucasus is new Georgian airline which stated on their website to operate four charter flights to Antalya in August and September using a MD83 registered 4L-=censored=. See the company facebook site for photo. The aircraft currently has white fuselage with titles and white tail. The photos showing blueish tail are Photoshops.

Besides that not much news to report. Iraqi still seen a couple of times per week. Petroleum seems a one of charter.
Saturday mornings by far the best day to see interesting planes at Antalya.

went spotting at Antalya during a familiy holiday at September 14. from early morning to around 10:00 all landings were on 36R. So no parallel runway usage. At 10:00 they changed and all landings were at 18C. Mid September 2013 was the time for a couple of Hadj flights operated by Saudia. Aircraft seen at AYT were Air Asia X A340 and Thai Oriënt B767 (basic white fuselage, Saudia titles and tail logo).
While staying at approach location 18C the police checked me out. I thought they were sending me away but it turned out a car of another spotter was parked in a inconveniant location. The police said pictures are okay and he even told he takes pictures of aircraft as well. So it seems the police is getting used to spotters.

B737-400 is probably TC-SKF, it was damaged and taken out of service at AYT in 2011. When I visited AYT it was still there. The B737-800 could be TC-TJK, also damaged at AYT. I noted it on the 22nd of August, but when I left on the 29th of August, it wasn't there. It could've moved to a different part of the airport.
Cheers,
Gideon
