Airtattoo Update 27th March

The Air Tattoo's parent company, the Royal Air Force Charitable Trust Enterprises, has appointed Andy Armstrong to succeed Tim Prince as Chief Executive following the 2014 airshow in July.

We are aware of media reports claiming that the US Defense Department is "poised to approve the first trans-Atlantic flight of Lockheed Martin Corp's F-35" and for it to take part in this summer's Air Tattoo.

Whilst we would welcome the participation of such a significant aircraft at July's airshow we are unable to comment further at this stage.

A first-time British airshow visitor at the Royal International Air Tattoo 2014 will be a C-27J Spartan twin-turboprop transport from the Lithuanian Air Force.

It is one of three such aircraft operated by Lithuania, which accepted its first example of the Alenia Aermacchi-built airlifter - displayed often at RIAT by the Italian Air Force - in December 2006.

We are aware that the Royal Netherlands Air Force F-16 Demo Team has included the Air Tattoo on its calendar for 2014. We shall let you know if and when we receive official confirmation.

Five flying items for the Royal International Air Tattoo 2014 have been confirmed by the Italian Air Force. The spectacular Frecce Tricolori aerobatic team, flying 10 Aermacchi AT-339A jet trainers, will join the Red Arrows' 50th display season celebrations, while there will also be solo displays from an Alenia Aermacchi AMX, Alenia C-27J Spartan, Eurofighter Typhoon and Panavia Tornado from the air force's Reparto Sperimentale Volo flight test centre.
The Finnish Air Force has contacted us to say: "Much as we would like to display our equipment and the skills of our pilots in front of the audience in the famed Royal International Air Tattoo, the current high demands to which our personnel is subjected unfortunately preclude our participation this time."

Update 10 April 2014:

Two F-16 MLUs from 338 Skvadron at Ørland will be joining the Royal International Air Tattoo's celebration of the Fighting Falcon's 40th anniversary on static display. Not only is Norway one of the longest-standing F-16 operators, but it was also one of the first countries to throw its weight behind the Air Tattoo when it was founded at North Weald in 1971. Very appropriate, therefore, to see the Norwegians back for Tim Prince's last show in charge.

The UK's tri-service Joint Helicopter Command is to send seven helicopters to RIAT 2014. Taking part in the flying display will be the ever-spectacular RAF Chinook, along with an Army Air Corps Apache and Lynx AH7. The static display is due to include a Puma and Merlin from the RAF, plus an increasingly seldom-seen Gazelle and rare Bell 212 from the AAC.

We are aware of the tweet made by the Swedish Air Force 'Gripen Solo Display' stating 'Anyone else heading for RIAT Airshow? I am.' Well, all we can say at this stage is that he won't be if he doesn't secure his admission ticket in advance! :0)

We have received notification that a senior military delegation from the US Marine Corps will be among the guests attending this summer's Air Tattoo.

According social media reports, from one hour ago, the Pentagon has given the green light for the first Atlantic crossing of the pond for the F-35. Mentioned are up to 3 F-35's including at least 1 B model and flown by an RAF pilot. If everything has been cleared I expect the RIAT and Farnborough organisations to officially confirm this news on short notice

You want an "exhaustive update list"? Well, there ya go...
•Confirmation has come that three examples of the Lockheed Martin F-35B Lightning II, the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF), will make the new multi-role combat aircraft's European debut in the flying and static displays at the Royal International Air Tattoo 2014. Two of the aircraft are expected to come from the US Marine Corps, which is currently introducing the F-35B to service, while the third will be an example destined for the UK, which will operate the Lightning II in a joint Royal Air Force/Royal Navy effort.

•The Royal Netherlands Air Force's F-16AM Fighting Falcon solo display, this year being provided by 322 and 323 Squadrons at Leeuwarden with new demo pilot Capt Jeroen 'Slick' Dickens, will be making its sole UK appearance of the year at this summer's Royal International Air Tattoo. This forms part of the show's tribute to the 40th anniversary of the F-16. Also coming from the Netherlands, this time for static display, is a Dornier 228-212 maritime surveillance aircraft operated by the Dutch Coastguard under the administrative control of Air Force unit 334 Squadron, a C-130H Hercules and an additional two F-16's.

•Leading American aerospace company Beechcraft is again set to participate in the Royal International Air Tattoo this year. It will send two examples of its T-6 Texan II turboprop trainer and light attack aircraft, together with a King Air 350 twin-turboprop multi-purpose aircraft.

•QinetiQ is sending four aircraft from its Boscombe Down-based test and evaluation fleet, as also operated by the Empire Test Pilots' School, to the Royal International Air Tattoo 2014. A Hawk T1, hopefully the prototype aircraft XX154, will join the type's 40th anniversary celebration, while a recently-acquired Avro RJ70 will make its Air Tattoo debut. Completing the selection will be an Alpha Jet A and an Agusta A109E Power helicopter.

•A very rare Italian visitor to the Royal International Air Tattoo 2014 will be the Piaggio R166C operated by a civilian group called I Fenicotteri (The Flamingos). The Air Tattoo has in the past seen participation by Italian Air Force P166s, but this example of the gull-winged light transport has never seen military service. Piaggio used the aircraft as its demonstrator for the civilian P166C before it was sold to Milan-based company Transavio. Later it fell into disrepair, but I Fenicotteri started a lengthy restoration that took 17,000 hours to complete. Registered now as an R166C, it flew again in November 2011.

•The familiar sight of a Robinson R44 piloted by RAF Charitable Trust Enterprises Chairman Alan Smith will once again touch down at RAF Fairford for this summer's airshow. The aircraft performs a valuable support role during the event.

•We are aware of the recent article in Aviation Week stating that Textron is hoping that its Scorpion prototype light attack, reconnaissance aircraft will make its European debut at this summer's Air Tattoo. The story states planning was ongoing and the trip was not a 'done deal'.

•The Turkish Air Force will be sending its impressive Solotürk display of an F-16C Fighting Falcon to RIAT 2014. Solotürk previously appeared at the Air Tattoo in 2011, scooping the King Hussein Memorial Sword for best overall flying demonstration on its UK debut. Capt Yusuf Kurt is in the hot seat this time, as Turkey makes its contribution to RIAT's celebrations of the F-16's 40th anniversary.

A pair of classic combat jets will be appearing in the static display of the Royal International Air Tattoo 2014, thanks to the Hellenic Air Force.

From the Greek air arm will come a pair of LTV A-7 Corsair II attack aircraft, operated by 336 Mira (Squadron) at Araxos in western Greece.
Part of 116 PM (Combat Wing),
this is now the only military unit in the world still flying the veteran A-7,

which first took to the air in 1965 and earned its combat spurs with the US Navy and US Air Force during the Vietnam War. 336 Mira's sister squadron in the Araxos-based wing, 335, has converted to the F-16 Fighting Falcon.

It could be the last chance to see Greece's Corsair IIs, never regular visitors to this country, at a British air display - the type is reportedly scheduled for retirement later this year.
RETIREMENT IN OCTOBER 2014... :(

"The appearance of the two Greek A-7s will delight a lot of enthusiasts", said Air Tattoo spokesman Richard Arquati. "They will also contrast with the more modern combat aircraft appearing at the show, not least the brand-new F-35 Lightning II - in many ways, one of the A-7's successors."
