Palma de Mallorca 2014 (LEPA / PMI)

Post by redcan »

Hiya,

Spent a nice Easter-weekend at PMI with Jeroen, Mark and Niels which resulted in quite a bunch of (sun)holiday-related European airplanes. However, I've visited the place twice before and it's obvious that if you want to make real numbers on this kind of airliners you should go over in July or August. That part of the year it's really busy and you will make a lot more planes. Anyway, we stayed at the Helios Hotel which is located in Can Pastilla, overlooking the airport including the southern runway and a big part of the general aviation ramp. Exiting the airport the easiest way to get to the hotel is by taxi, a ride which will cost you between 12-15 Euro's. Taking the bus to the hotel is also an option as Line 21 runs between Aeropuerto Mallorca to S'Arenal, passing by the hotel. I guess you just have to ask the driver where to get out as I don't know the name of the stop. The bus takes approximately 10-15 minuted longer than a cab and a one-way fare is Eur 3.- each.

Regarding your room in the hotel, ask for a room on the 5th floor (that's the highest they go) facing the airport. I'm pretty sure that 552-540 will be okay (we stayed in 548 and 545 this time). Basically, if you've got decent bins with you it's pretty impossible to miss something during daylight hours. After it has gone dark you won't read of that much anymore.
From the hotel you can see a part of the general aviation ramp but not all of it. That's not a problem as if you just exit the hotel and walk in the general direction of the ramp you'll come across a dirtroad leading you directly to where you want to be. Just keep an eye out on where you put your feet as the dirtpath leads trough bushes being home to a lot of critters. We had to stop once cause a snake decided to cross the road just in front of us.

Anyway, here is a a log of the bizjets which were seen during our visit. If you go over to a place like PMI I know that bizjets are not your main target but I just wanted to give an example of what you might see in a couple of days. Also for us, the main target was to catch up with airliners like Air Berlin, Germanwings, TUI, Monarch, Thomson, etc. and that kind of airlines do fly in all the time
