Norway to upgrade P-3C Orion mission systems

The Royal Norwegian Air Force (RNoAF) is to upgrade the mission systems of two
of its Lockheed Martin P-3C Orion maritime patrol aircraft (MPA)
under a USD12.1 million deal announced by the US Department of Defense (DoD) on 2 May.

The contract with Lockheed Martin covers the procurement of aircraft mission system modifications to install on the aircraft as part of the RNoAF spiral upgrade programme.

Work is scheduled to be completed in October 2015.

This work is in addition to the Service Life Extension Programme (SLEP) kits that Lockheed Martin was contracted to install on the RoNAFs four P-3C and three P-3N aircraft in 2007.

This adds more than 15,000 flying hours to each aircraft, enabling them to remain in service beyond 2020,
and saw the fitting of new outer wings, centre wing lower surfaces, horizontal stabiliser, leading edges, and nacelle components.

Although the SLEP and subsequent upgrades will see them through to at least 2020,
they are currently scheduled for retirement in 2017.
