US Navy P-8A TDY reports for Japan

Sunday 01st December,

The First 2 P-8A Poseidon TDY to be established overseas today commenced at Kadena AB with the arrival of the following P-8As from NAF Atsugi,

A further 2 P-8As arrived at Kadena,again after a fuel stop at Atsugi,

A fifth P-8A used by VP-16 at Kadena on this TDY was 168438 LF-438. The sixth was 168430 LF-430.

VP-16 was due to be relieved at Kadena at the end on May. However so far there is no sign of this happening.

Maybe VP-16's deployment has been extended, or there has been a crew swap only?.

Wednesday 04th June,

P-8A 168435 was photographed today at Kadena with it's unit markings removed, so VP-5 are assuming control of the 6 VP-16 airplanes here.

The VP-5 P-8A allocation at NAS Jacksonville, FL should be handed to VP-16 in return.

A second (ex) VP-16 P-8A, 168438 has emerged today at Kadena minus unit markings.

P-8A 168436 LA-436 was photographed at Kadena on the 1st July.3 of the VP-16 P-8As are to be handed over to VP-5 at Kadena.

Effective from Tuesday 09th December,50% of the VP-5 Poseidons have been detached to U-Tapao RTNS, Thailand. Details,

168431 LA-431 VVTH110 crew support only, returned to Kadena
168436 LA-436 VVTH120
168437 LA-437 VVTH140 (called VVPH140 at one stage)
168438 LA-438 VVTH150 (VVPH150 showing on the callsign field on SBS)

VVTH1xx callsigns indicate on detachment in Thailand
VVPH1xx callsigns are probably Clark AB,RP detached airplanes

Today,09th December the first VP-45 Poseidon,168758 LN-758 arrived at Kadena.

The 3 remaining P-8As at U-Tapao returned to Kadena on the morning of Friday 12th December, via a mission off southern Vietnam.168438 departed as VVTH130, the other airplanes as their callsigns used inbound.

Saturday 07th February,

VP-45 are in the process of taking over the P-8A detachment at Kadena and some of the VP-5 Poseidons have been re-assigned to VP-45.

However at least one VP-45 P-8A is en route to Kadena as PELECAN09 (168440) routed PHIK-PGUA today.

VP-45 P-8A 168758 was noted at Kadena on 10th March, so it appears VP-45 brought all 6 P-8As from NAS Jacksonville for their TDY.

RODN 10th August,

Unmarked P-8A 168754 was noted here today. this is probably the first arrival from VP-8 'Tigers' who are due to be deployed here imminently(some 2 months earlier than envisaged).

A second VP-8 Poseidon calling TIGER40 was noted en route here at Hickham AFB over the last weekend.

VP-8 P-8A 168759 calling TIGER22 was noted in the south east of the USA on the 10th and is possibly en route to Kadena at this time.
