To celebrate the 60th anniversary of the founding of Japan's Air Self Defence Force (ASDF),
service members rode on plane-shaped scooters at a ceremony on Wednesday (September 24).
"This is to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Air Self Defence Force
and so this has been done as an internal public relations event,"
JASDF's public affairs office major, Yasuhisa Furuta said.
The 24 members riding on those novelty scooters modelled after fighter aircraft are staff members who never leave the ground.
Their jobs range from mechanics to support staff.
Their performance was such a hit that Furata was asked if the scooters would be brought overseas.
"There isn't any sort of plan yet but if there was indeed that sort of chance, then it would indeed be wonderful to take it.
Although it's just a club activity at this point though," Furata said.
The first of the scooters was created in 1992 at the same base that housed Japan's actual acrobatic flying team Blue Impulse.
