As part of a deal with the Israeli Finance Ministry,
the Defence Ministry,
which owns the land,
will receive ILS1billion (USD355million) to vacate the space by 2017.
Once empty, the land will be home to 16,000 housing units.
According to Sirkis, the expected closure of Sde Dov airport in June 2015 and the construction of housing units on the site will harm not only tourist and business traffic on the Tel Aviv-Eilat route, but also medical traffic.
