A 1995 lawsuit by Trump over airport noise ended with the county agreeing to lease Trump the land where he later built Trump International Golf Club. A 2010 lawsuit by Trump over airport noise was dismissed.

The Mediterranean-style Mar-a-Lago, completed in 1927, is a National Historic Landmark. Trump bought it in 1985 and after extensive restoration opened it 10 years later as a private club. About 450 of the island's elite are members.

"There's no place in the world like it — it's one of the great places in the world," Trump said. "And I have to protect it. I have to protect it."

For a while, even billionaire Donald Trump was involved. Mar-a-Lago, the 118-room mansion Trump bought for $5 million in 1985, is right in the flight path, just a few blocks from Petty`s estate. Trump and his wife even hosted a fundraiser for the effort.

But Trump, it seems, became more of a hindrance than a help.

He even suggested the airport be moved, an idea silly enough to invoke a flurry of negative publicity.

Then he and Petty backed two candidates for the Palm Beach County Commission who had met with the groups fighting the noise.
They were thought to be shoo-ins but then were soundly defeated-as a result of anti-Trump backlash in the community, observers are convinced.
