Never been to an air fete, but was it really that good? I can only remember seeing backlit pictures and pretty standard participants.

Think that refers to your own definition of "standard". I remember both quality and quantity... but then again, it where the '90s

I remember the last time they looked at resurrecting Air Fete they found out that changes around or on the base and the change of rules concerning airshows since the last one made it impossible to stage a show. At least that was what one of the organisers of Waddington (that was involved in that survey) told at UKAR.

Most recent roze-tinted remembrances were more about the food than the aircraft.

I must admit that only the quality of participiants didn't make it stand out with the rest of the airshows especially in the 90'ies. But then again, this problem had everything to to do wiuth shrinking budgets of which every airshow has trouble dealing with.. Although they did have plenty of US stuff on display and if thats your thing, it's a nice show. It was more the whole atmosphere which made it a special place. But yes, photography wise it was a backlit affair ruining most of my slides of the last F-111 on display in 1993 among others. It's part nostalgia of times never to return.

I really loved the way of putting the static show together. And the atmosphere with it's surrounding"camping sites" . Well, I really want one more. Count me in:-)

It's the Mildenhall Air Fete where the Mountain Dew 'status' was born to us Europeans. Plus, it had a pretty OK SR-71 on the static, or flying. Add to that some Stateside aircraft and BAM! there's the almost mythical status of the Air Fete.
Would like to experience one last very good one. Pretty impossible, but we can at least try?
