Riga Aviation Museum - 27/03 [MIL]

Post by Macc »

Was travelling to Tallinn for the weekend and I had a six-hour layover in Riga. Being a small airport with little to do I took my laptop out and started to kill time when I realised I had forgotten my plug adaptor and then I had four hours left with no entertainment. Then a friend told me there was an aviation museum literally a two minute walk from the terminal so I rushed out to see what was there with no expectations - so I was pretty happy when I arrived to find a variety of MiGs and even a Tu-22, although the latter was inaccessible.

The museum is open Monday till Friday from 9-6 and costs 7EUR for entry.

Some aircraft were pretty shabby looking but to me this was the attraction. It was almost like a junkyard of ex-Soviet military aircraft and it was great. I'll start with my highlight - the MiG-25 Foxbat.

p.s. Excuse the dustspots, I really need to give my sensor a good clean.

I like this! 'Preserved', but without the effort of actually preserving :-) Nice report!

Nice pictures Chris, it brings back good memories when I visited this museum. The cockpit shot however is not from a mi-26 but from a Mi-6A...

Hilco

Nice shots indeed! Great editing. Love the way you focus on the details!
And so near to the terminal :) Have to keep that in mind!

I'd rather depict atmosphere and the 'heat of the moment' making a catchy photo than to reflect the real situation and real colours showing a boring photo.

Does anyone know the id's of the An-2 hulks that are parked next to the fence, between the Tu22 and the museum?

Your Mi-26 is actually a Mi-6. not a Mi-26.
Nice shots by the way.

Hi Arjan,

I have these two listed as dumped in my log from 2010.

AN-2 CCCP-02660 Dump AEROFLOT C/S
AN-2 CCCP-32418 Dump

On my overview pictures I can see them in the background in between the TU-22 and the museum, so it is possible that these are the ones you are looking for.

Hilco

Thanks a lot Hilco!

Those are the two I was missing. The serials are partially blocked and the bushes have grown but the serials and location are matching.

No problem, I was there in wintertime back then, so no problems for me with bushes ;)

Hi,

I know it's a "holy mackarel thread revival" case,

But I'm searching for more pictures of the Yak-28R displayed here at this fabulous museum. It's for a scale modelling project to find finaly a rightly documented camouflage scheme without having to guess most of the paintscheme.

More exactly it's from the aircraft's right aft, as this is mostly an uncovered spot in like 99% of all pictures to be found on the net.

Like the style you photograph Macc, you maybe have some pictures giving a view what's inside the glass nose (really hoping here :) ) And last but not least, great pictures giving a rather unusual view on the collection. Thanks for sharing!
