Planning a trip to Miami (MIA/KMIA)

Hi all,

I am planning a one-week trip to Miami (MIA/KMIA) in february or march.
Has anyone good suggestions for me? (like hotel, interesting airfields in neighbourhood etc)?

Hoi Ramon,

Ben afgelopen november 4 dagen in Miami geweest. Ging op vakantie naar Curacao en dacht: laten we dit even combineren. Er staat een stukje in de laatste Scramble.
Auto gehuurd via internet bij Alamo. Gewoon de kleinste nemen die uiteindelijk niet aanwezig was en voor dezelfde prijs een grote bus meegekregen met alle toeters en bellen.
Hotel ook via internet geboekt. Dit is de beroemde Comfort Inn & Suites langs de noordzijde van het vliegveld. Deze is bekend onder de spotters. Je kunt dan ook een kamer vragen met uitkijk op het vliegveld. Tevens happy hour tussen 17.00 en 19.00. 2 bier halen 1 betalen. Ook is de kans groot dat er andere spotters aanwezig zijn. In mijn geval wel en dus erg gezellig. Vanuit dit hotel zijn alle spottersplekken goed te bereiken. Ook genoeg winkeltjes en fast foodrestaurants in de buurt.
Uitstekende mogelijkheden rond het vliegveld. Zeker bij Custom met gaten in het hekwerk speciaal voor de fotograaf. Ook Eldorado geeft uitstekende plekken voor degene met een camera. Altijd andere spotters aanwezig. Er zijn rustige momenten en voor inkomende kisten uit Midden- en Zuidamerika de zuidelijke baan bij Eldorado nemen. Ook op deze baan komen de meeste vrachtkisten binnen. Op de Noordelijke baan gaat zo een beetje alles weg. Inkomend meer spul uit de USA en soms een vrachtbak.
Iedere ochtend even de vele zijwegen induiken voor nieuwe kisten en/of nummers.
Opa Locka is niet ver weg en leuk voor een aantal uren.
Ft Lauderdale is totaal verschillend van Miami en ook leuk voor 1 of 2 dagen. Op het vliegveld is het mogelijk om boven op een parkeergarage alles te overzien en te platen. Deze plek is speciaal voor de liefhebber. Ook aan de kop van de baan (ten westen) bij landingen sta je niet verkeerd. Neem wel een trapje mee. Zet deze op de picknicktafel en je maakt de mooiste foto´s.
Als je ook iets hebt met bizjets ga dan ook even langs bij Ft Lauderdale executive. Klein veld maar altijd een surprise.

Hello everybody,

At Miami International Airport, you have 2 good spotting points:

- The Holes at the thresholds of rwy's 8L, 8R & 12
- The El Dorado furniture store at the threshold of rwy 9

At Fort Lauderdale International Airport you also have 2 good spotting points:

- The Viewing Park at rwy 9L
- The Hibiscus Parking Garage for views of rwy 27R

I really want to visit these 2 airports (& Opa Locka), but because of my future plans it will be as early as 2013 before that happens. My question:

Are there any kind of future developement plans at both airports that will threaten these spotting locations? If yes, will this happen before or after 2013?

no one can tell yet what will or will not change the life of a spotter in the next 3 years, esspecially not when it concerns spotting in the US.

I was at MIA, OPF and FLL last year and was told by locals that the situation varied over the last couple of years, depending on the spotter friendliness of airport authorities.

To give you an example: when FLL came under new management some years ago, the current spotterslocations were re-opened and spotting was allowed again. At MCO, however, a change of management resulted in a complete ban of spotting at or around the airport.

So, like I said before, wait until you're able to go there, then ask again for actual information.

I heard that there's a good hotel at Miami Airport with a view of the northern runways (if you ask for the right room). Which hotel is this and has anyone an experience with this hotel? Are they friendly, regarding spotters?

The Comfort Inn is a well known enthusiast hotel? - have not stayed there myself but it does get average reviews.
In Nov 2009 I stayed at the Embassy Suites which was similar in price (they had an offer on) but had been recently refurbished and was excellent. The views were very good and had no problems when asking for an airport view

Hello,

This summer I will be at Miami for a couple of days.
After a thoroughly search on internet I found that spotting is possible at Miami international.
Near the carpet store is a possibility but on street view I saw that you need a ladder?
I don't know how much the situation has changed since the recordings of street view.

Is there a scheme regarding the inbound and outbound times?
I'm not staying near the airfield, is there anyone who has experience with car rental in Miami?
Of course I have searched already on the internet but maybe does someone here has a good recommendation.

I also noticed that there is no website where regular spotters at Miami post pictures and share information.
Did I missed something or is this correct?
