Obviously with TYs, Swamp-Foxes and a host of Hornets, Red Flag 16-1 was the only place to be last week, but to fly millions of miles for just 50 new nos is daft. So, to boost the tally a hastily devised cunning plan was put in motion involving an 01.00 departure to LAX and barely sixteen hours later N606CZ was leaping into the crisp clear SoCal skies, and I was off.
02Feb: MCAS Camp Pendleton - loads of helicopters visible from 11,000", big ones small ones and medium ones.
02Feb: MCAS Miramar - 35 Ospreys, 5 C-130s (including the Black-tailed one) and quite a lot beside on the huge ramp, even from 10,000".
02Feb : NASNI - just a few Seahawks visible from final approach to SAN where the CG whateverHawk remained unidentified (OK, I forgot). If anyone knows which Hornet took off at 09.25 ....
02Feb: NAF El Centro - the Growlers and Kingsville T-45s of the previous week had gone, replaced by some 10 AH-1Zs and UH-1Ys from HMLA-267 (remember, small & medium helos above
Confirmed so far are UV06/169102, UV08/167802 & UV09/167798 all UH-1Ys & UV43/168002 plus UV55/168799 (spec cols) both AH-1Zs. Still here were 18-24 VFA122 F/A-18Es and Fs including the very tasty NJ101, the Blues (see earlier posts) and a brace of COD 162163/26 & 162175/33 from VRC30 (one of them reckoned he'd made 53 approches!)
Back to SAN and again ignoring the S-70, it was time for a quick trip back to LAX (N920SW) then a very pleasant hop in a Virgin 319 (N529VA) to LAS. Quite a day! 4 flights, 15hrs 45 airborne.
Wednesday 03Feb was quiet, dawn at the back of Nellis, back to the Super8 for a moderate(dare I say Hateful)8 breakfast then Cheyenne / Speedway at the behest of my photographer who joined rather late last night. Needless to say most of the usual suspects were noted, as were a few local additions to the EOR log. I'll combine the two days (yes dear readers, what a waste of a day) for an update on the 5G situation as logged at Nellis:
F-22s 4011/WA, 4071/WA, 4109/WA, 4111/WA, 4124/OT, 4128/OT, 4152 & 4155/FF visitors, parked with the based assets plus 4188/OT
F-35s 5004/OT, 5005/OT (I have a note of 5007/OT but not confirmed, 006 is here too) 5049/WA "16WPS", 5051/WA "USAFWS", 5053/WA "57WG", 5067/WA, 5073/OT & 5074/OT - these last two presumably fairly new here).
Some visitors were USArmy C-12R 50091 both days and unmarked F-15C 85-0100 (Thursday).
OK, for illustration, well, just go look at Peter's page, but this caught my eye for non-standard presentation
and having posted the Blues in flight, here is the reason most people go to Nellis:-
After a very tasty supper in the Memphis BBQ it was time to head for my top target on the trip, but first some nocturnal poling at Bullhead/Laughlin International Airport where for the second year, Landmark Aviation is providing the facilities and logistics to support the 180 Navy personnel and their two dozen T-6 aircraft while they train here from January through March. It was a bit dark when we got there but the following from U.S. Navy Training Wing 4, Corpus Christi were noted (all coded "G") 166014, 166045, 166052, 166084, bored now, anyway, I logged 15.
05Feb and an early start to the Embrey Riddle university of flight where one of Lockheed's little wonders guards the visitor center (never got one of these at Trent Poly) ..
From here it was off to Luke for some more 5G assets, being a Friday there was limited legacy action but we did get about a dozen F-35 movements, some were duplicates. Here is a reasonably new / sharp example:
And just to finish, one for the USMOOS fans, while we were enjoying our Pizza, Dangleberry 01 decided it was more fun spraying us than spraying the crops ....
Apparently it is the former 72-21432!
On the way back I watched "Bridge of Spies". We can discuss just exactly which aircraft featured with the actors/drivers in the hangar another time (looked like a TR-1 to me)
