Good afternoon,
Tuesday the 29th of March I visited some German W&R locations. Hereby a log.
Usingen
Address: Am Dornbusch, 61250 Usingen.
Mr.Ralph Tiel has a small but rather interesting collection. All aircraft are otuside, and can easily be seen or photographed.
(7)2+88 Bell/Dornier UH-1D Iruquois (tail only)
unknown MBB Bo-105P
unknown MBB Bo-105 (fuselage only)
(ex Soviet) / "77+67" Mill Mi 2
F-WZAK Aérospatiale SA360H Dauphin
D-HAAA (3) Westland-Bell-Soloy 47G-3B-1 (Sioux AH1) (tail section only, ex XT227)
XT829 Westland-Bell Sioux AH1
Both Bo105's remain unidentified: although I was able to walk around the ex HEER one, no traces of it's previous ID could be found.
The second one are the mere remains of an fuselage in orange/blue c/s. Cockpit parts we used to restore the ex-HEER one.
The Dauphin (c/n 1012) is an ex Aérospatiale demonstrator, in dessert Armée de Terre colours.
Oberursel
Address: Hohemarkstraße 60-70, 61440 Oberursel (Taunus),
The large Rolls-Royce facility here has two preserved aircraft, both at the rear side.
Drive along the main entrance, and go left at first chance. Park your car after 100m left of the road,
and take the small paved road (no vehicles allowed) which leads you behind the facility. After about 200m the G91 and UH-1D can be seen.
(99+08) / 31+99 Fiat G91R/3
72+68 Bell/Dornier UH-1D Iruquois
ex Bonames/Maurice Rose AAF
address: Am Burghof 55, 60437 Bonames/Frankfurt am Main, Duitsland
Although no aircraft can be found at this former US Army airfield, 25 years after my first visit (02-08-1991, platforms loaded with choppers )
I thought it was worth the detour just for nostalgic reasons. Though closed in late 1992 already, as nowadays "Alter Flugplatz"
only a few buildings and concrete spots were actually demolished but the runway (used by cyclist and skeelers !),
the tower and adjacent hangar (Tower Café), a hangar (Feuerwehr Museum) and two
large hangars (Aeronauten Bonames) are still in use. So beside the lack of choppers still very much the same like 1991........Nice !
Bad Vilbel
Address: Ulmenweg 6a, Bad Vilbel
The location can easily be recognized by the erected wing in front of the house, stating "Familie Fiebig".
Just left of it is a garage, marked with a spurious "No parking: reserved for F-104 Starfighters only" sign.
Through small cracks in the garage door the MiG-21 can (just) be seen.
7015 Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-21PFM (front fuselage section)
Frankfurt-Zoo
The Dornier can best be seen (that is, from the outside) from the Rhönstraße/Am Tiergarten road, at the South side of this large zoo.
(56+27) / "D-ENTE" Dornier Do27B-1
ex Hanau AAF
Address: Zum Fliegerhorst, Erlensee
The US Army left this large airfield (AH64, OH58, UH60) in 2007. Since then the side has been turned into a large industrial estate.
Platforms, and most of the (large) hangars have been demolished. Just left are the former tower, two large hangars,
and a housing area which (I guess) won't survive for long.........Furthermore a large part of the area is fenced off.
Ofcourse no W&R could be found here anymore, but for the same nostalgic reasons as I visited Bonames I also wanted to
watch these remnants of the cold war.
