This is the terrifying moment that a plane parked at Jieyang Chaoshan Airport, Shantou was struck by a bolt of lightning during a thunderstorm on Monday afternoon.
The Boeing 737-800 aircraft, Registration B-5716, operated by China Southern Airlines' subsidiary Shantou Airlines, was parked at Gate No. 117 an hour after landing at 1:48 p.m. when it was hit by the lightning.
Shortly after the crew deplaned, the aircraft was hit by the lightning at 3:03 p.m., according to a source familiar with the matter.
China Southern Airlines said the plane was hit as it was preparing for an overhaul at the airport. There were no passengers or crew members on the plane.
