Long before EgyptAir Flight 804’s pilots received an alert signaling smoke in a vital electronics compartment, U.S. safety watchdogs documented that such warnings on that airliner model were frequently erroneous
and sometimes prompted unnecessary and risky cockpit responses.

According to people familiar with the probe into this month’s crash of the Airbus Group SE A320,
investigators are trying to determine whether the pilots reacted to the smoke message by following an emergency checklist that can lead to shutting down essential safety systems,
including automated flight-control protections.

EgyptAir crash: Black box signals heard by search teams

Signals have been detected that are likely to have come from one of the black boxes of the EgyptAir plane that crashed last month.

They were picked up by the French vessel Laplace as was searching the Mediterranean Sea.

Laplace identified the signals that "might belong to one of the data recorders" from the EgyptAir flight, said France's BEA who are responsible for investigating air incidents.

The French navy is awaiting the arrival of a second vessel that is equipped to take pictures and retrieve objects from the sea.

Egyptian investigators first reported that the French vessels had picked up signals from the wreckage search area, saying they were "assumed" to be from one of the devices.

Debris from the plane has been recovered from the sea, some 290km (180 miles) north of the Egyptian port city of Alexandria.

But the bulk of the plane and the bodies of passengers are thought to be deep under the sea.

The ship provided, the John Lethbridge, belonging to Deep Ocean Search Ltd. is equipped with a scanning sensor that could allow investigators to pinpoint the exact location of the main body of the plane and is also carrying equipment to eventually recover the black boxes. It arrived on Thursday at the Alexandria port, Egyptian authorities said.

Accident investigators believe the airliner’s main wreckage is some 10,000 feet below the sea’s surface.

French investigators, who have extensive experience in accident probes, are also in talks with their Egyptian counterparts who are leading the probe about what would be required to read the storage devices once they are recovered.

A second ship equipped with specialist search devices will join the hunt for the "black box" flight recorders and the wreckage of an EgyptAir jet on Friday, the head of France's air-accident investigation agency said on Thursday.

A French naval supply vessel picked up a signal from one of the two recorders on June 1 and Egypt has chartered a second vessel operated by Mauritius-based Deep Ocean Search, equipped with sonar equipment and an underwater vehicle.

Remi Jouty, director of the BEA air accident agency, which is advising Egypt on the underwater search, said the first ship continued to pick up locator signals from the first recorder, whose location had been narrowed to within 1 to 2 kilometres.

Jouty said he was sorry that French recommendations to extend the battery life to 90 days, first made in December 2009 following the Atlantic crash of an Air France jet and still not implemented worldwide, had taken so long to be acted on. The new rules take effect in 2018.

To recover the black boxes from the seabed 3,000 metres below the surface, investigators will need to narrow the signals to within a few metres and establish whether the pingers are still connected to the recorders, Jouty said.

Wreckage of the EgyptAir flight that went missing over the Mediterranean last month has been found, Egyptian investigators say.

A statement said "several main locations of the wreckage" had been identified.

A deep sea search vessel had also sent back the first images of the wreckage, the statement added.

The Egyptian investigation committee said that investigators on board the John Lethbridge search vessel, which has been contracted by the Egyptian government, would now draw up a map of the wreckage distribution.

Signals emitted by the recorders are expected to expire by 24 June, experts have warned.

The cockpit voice recorder from the EgyptAir plane that crashed last month has been found in the Mediterranean, Egyptian investigators say.

The "black box" was damaged and had to be pulled out in several stages but its memory unit is intact, they said.

A search vessel with an underwater robot has been scouring the crash site and has sent back images of wreckage.

In a statement, investigators said: "The vessel's equipment was able to salvage the part [of the recorder] that contains the memory unit, which is considered the most important part of the recording device."

The recorder will now be taken to the Egyptian city of Alexandria to be studied.

EgyptAir crash: Second flight recorder recovered

The flight data recorder from the EgyptAir plane that crashed in the Mediterranean Sea last month has been retrieved, Egyptian investigators say.

The news comes a day after search teams recovered the cockpit voice recorder from the wreckage of Flight MS804.

Earlier on Friday, an unnamed official in the investigation committee told AP news agency that the voice recorder's data was already being analysed by experts, including representatives of France's air safety agency and the plane's manufacturer, Airbus.

Egyptian air accident investigators have revealed that traces of explosives
were detected on the remains of victims
of the EgyptAir flight from Paris that crashed in the Mediterranean sea in May.

The claim by Egypt’s civil aviation investigation committee suggests that the crash, which killed all 66 people on board,
was caused by a bomb,
although it does not solve the mystery of where a device might have been smuggled on board - or who was responsible.

The disappearance of the EgyptAir flight came only months after a Russian airliner flying from Sharm el-Sheikh was brought down by a bomb over the Sinai Peninsula – killing 224 people. That attack was claimed by the local affiliate of Islamic State.

“The central directorate of aircraft accident investigation received reports from the forensic medicine authority indicating traces of explosive materials
found in some of the remains of the victims’ bodies,” the ministry stated on Thursday.

An Egyptian source familiar with the matter said Cairo had informed France months ago of its findings
but French investigators had requested more time to study them.

“That is why it took so long to make an announcement,” the source said,
The EgyptAir plane had been flying from Paris to Cairo when it disappeared from radar over the Mediterranean.
Investigators determined that a fire had broken out in or near the cockpit before it crashed between Crete and the coast of northern Egypt.

The word “fire” was audible on the plane’s cockpit voice recorder shortly before it crashed, the Egyptian investigative committee said in July.

The black box, retrieved from the crash site by a specialist diving vessel, also confirmed that smoke alarms had been triggered onboard,
while recovered wreckage had indications of soot.

The Airbus A320 had broadcast a number of fault messages before contact was lost, indicating that smoke had entered the nose of the aircraft where sensitive avionics control systems are housed.
Flight data, however, suggested that rather than exploding in mid-air, the plane had flown into the sea.

Egyptian investigators have confirmed the aircraft made a 90-degree left turn followed by a 360-degree turn to the right before hitting the sea.

Since the crash, small pieces of the wreckage and human remains have been recovered, while the bulk of the plane and the bodies of victims are believed to be in the water.

In September, French investigators were reported to have found trace levels of the explosive TNT
on recovered debris but claimed they were prevented from further examining it.
Egyptian officials denied the claim.

The latest announcement came as it was disclosed that the families of five French victims had launched a petition to recover the remains of those lost on the flight,
saying it had been seven months since they had been killed.

The Egyptian authorities had promised to return the bodies weeks ago but the process had inexplicably halted, perhaps because of the discovery of the explosive residue.

Egyptair MS804 crash: French investigators rule out terrorist attack

7 May, 2017
Last year SU-GCC, an Egyptair Airbus A320-232 crashed into the eastern Mediterranean Sea.

This week French investigators have ruled out the theory that suggests that a bomb was used to blast the aircraft out of the sky.
