Akinci squadrons to be disbanded (Turkey)

Post by F17_114PM »

According to kokpit.aero, the 141, 142 and 143 Filo from Ankara-Akinci will be (or are already?) disbanded, because of the military coup!

The Akinci wing was closed down immediatly after the coup attempt. Allegedly F-4E 2020s from one of the 2 filos still operating them bombed the runway there, to prevent any further aircraft movements.

What the future holds for the Turk Hava Kuuvetleri can only be guessed at at this time.

The base is apparently also no longer called Akinci, but is back to its old name Murted.

Heard on the Dutch radio news last week that the Turkish Air Force has an acute lack of pilots at the moment. Is this because of the Gulen fall out as well?

Seems to be indeed, according to news sources over 300 pilots were fired and only a handful of retired pilots opted to return into active service. And now a similar thing seems to happening in the navy where several hundred (again according to news sources) officers have been removed from active duty.

Being renamed 153 Filo would imply that the unit has been transferred to the 5th Main Jet Base at Merzifon.

This article mentions that over 300 pilots were fired, out of a total force of about 600. So that's half their pilots gone...
