News: Fatal crash S-92 EI-ICR "Rescue 116" on 20170314

Post by Jack »

In the early hours of the morning of 14 March, Irish Coast Guard S-92 EI-ICR "Rescue 116" crashed into the Atlantic 10km off Blacksod, County Mayo. The helicopter had four crewmembers on board. One crewmember was recovered but passed away; three crewmembers are missing. Iintense search is continuing around 10km west of Blacksod, Co Mayo, where the Dublin-based Sikorsky S92 disappeared after providing cover for another helicopter involved in an early-morning rescue operation. The aircraft lost contact at around 12.45am on Tuesday just before it was about to land to refuel, giving no indication of anything wrong.

Tides hamper efforts to lift helicopter wreckage

Updated / Wednesday, 29 Mar 2017 13:11

Spring tides off Blackrock island in Co Mayo are continuing to complicate efforts to partially lift the wreckage of a Coast Guard rescue helicopter from the sea bed.

Attempts to use a lifting bag to tilt the wreckage of the Rescue 116 helicopter last evening had to be abandoned after conditions proved too challenging.

Currents in the site where the wreckage is located, 40 metres below sea level, mean it is difficult for divers to safely access the aircraft.

The conditions have also compromised the ability of a Remotely Operated Vehicle to operate to its full potential.

Het wrak is gelocaliseerd maar de berging verloopt moeizaam; de oorzaak van de fatale crash is tot nu niet vastgesteld
