REQ: Spotting in Miami

As Miami is a well known place for planespotting, I'd like to visit the field sometime this year.

Locations are well documented on this and other sites, but I was wondering if anyone has any experience with the following:

- Can anyone recommend an affordable hotel in the area (no airfield view necessary)?
- How about renting a car, would that be necessary and/or and advantage?
- How long should I spend at MIA? Couple of days or would that get boring?

MIA is a real American Hub, which can make it a little annoying when the next plane is again AA
However they do have a lot of new A319 and 737 based here.
But the amount of non US traffic is very high for an airport in the USA and that makes it a good destination.
Also nearby Ft Lauderdale is very interseting, due to the large number of US carriers flying here.

There are several spots around the airport that allow for good viewing and good photography.
They are however far apart, and though most are covered by public transport, these busses are often low frequency routes.
I would recommand a car, also because there are many maintenance and cargo ramps along 36th St., which would be way to far to cover on foot.
If you book ahead cheap cars can be booked. Dont wait until you arrive !!
It will also make trips to the other airfields in southern Florida a lot easier.

As for accomodation, if you are on your own and looking for a real bargain, there is a small hostel (shared accomodation) 10 minute walk from the Car Rental Center/Metrostop

I've stayed at the Days Inn Miami International not far from the eldorado photo site. Usually about $100/night. Its not fancy but was clean and comfortable.
Also what is now the Clarion Inn & Suites on the north side. They do have rooms with a view of the mx ramps.

Car is Recommended. To get around to the various spotting/photo locations.

I'd say 2-3 Days should be enough for you to get your fill of most things.
