I had a holiday on the Island of Madeira over Christmas which was fantastic but it`s not the most exciting airport I`ve visited which to be fair was expected.
Regular services are operated by Sevenair with their sole Jetstream to nearby Porto Santo.
TAP send in a mix of narrow bodies from Lisbon and Porto. SATA send in the DH8D several times a week from Ponta Delgada.
Others to be seen include Aigle Azur, Apollo, Condor, Easyjet, Enter Air, Finnair, Germania, Jet 2, Luxair, Norwegian, Transavia, Thomas Cook and Tui (Germany, Sweden and UK).
One biz was seen D-IJOA C25A along with a C130 and C295 of the Portuguese AF.
I stayed in the small town of Machico which was only a few minutes drive from the airport and anything arriving/departing could be seen from the hotel.
It`s a super airport for viewing with a terrace landside and airside. Views from the opposite side of the airport on the hill are excellent but not great for photography at this time of year as the sun didn`t go far enough round and was more or less at the end runway 03 when setting. No ILS here and aircraft have to make a visual approach.
