Almost collision between F16 and sport plane above Lunteren

15-05-2018, 08:46 | From the editors

LUNTER In the airspace above Lunteren, Barneveld, Kootwijkerbroek and Otterlo,
an almost collision took place on Wednesday, May 9,
between an F16 of the Belgian Air Force and an ultralight sport plane.

Ton van Erp from Lunteren saw it happen
and contacted the Human Environment and Transport Inspectorate
of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management.

The inspection confirms that the devices were only 60 to 100 meters apart.
"This is far below the minimum distance of 300 meters",
the Inspectorate said in a reaction to Van Erp on Monday evening.

The F16 rose according to the inspection on Wednesday 9 May at 11.38 am from Kleine-Brogel Air Base in Belgium.

The other aircraft, a PH-4Q2 sport plane, went into the air at 10.53 from airbase Deelen.

Between 10.58 and 12.11 hours the sport plane rotated laps
over the area between Lunteren, Barneveld, Kootwijkerbroek and Otterlo.

At 11.50 am that day it almost went wrong.
The F16 flew over the same area and the sport plane came parallel to the flight path of the F16,
which at that time flew at about 500 meters altitude according to the inspection.

The distance between the two aircraft decreased to only 60 to 100 meters.

BOTSING According to witness Van Erp, there was little need for a real collision.
"In view of the course of both aircrafts,
a collision could have taken place when the pilot of the sport plane
had taken its course westward a few seconds earlier,
or the F16 had flown a fraction slower", says the Lunteraan.

NO REACTION
According to the Human Environment and Transport Inspectorate,
the F16 was given a warning by the military air traffic controller at 11.44 am.
The report meant that there was 'small' traffic in the neighborhood.

"However, the F16 did not react to this.
The Inspectorate also did not observe an evasive maneuver of the F16 (change in height or course). "

The inspectorate informs us that for this incident
she will contact the Military Aviation Authority (MLA) and the pilot of the sport plane.
