Not intending to rise a political based discussion, but the majority of the population
in the Crimea region are ethnic Russians. (Source wiki: 2001 60%).
Ukraine born Soviet leader Nikita Chroetsjov transferred Crimea in 1954 from Russia to the Ukraine,
as "a sign of friendship between the Russian and Ukrainian people".
History proved different......

Always a nice excuse. The Germans already used that before in the Czech Republic and Poland.

The actual situation is more complex. You could also ask yourself why 60% of the population was Russian in 2001. Why was the Russian percentage only 33% about a hundred years before? What happened e.g. to the Tatars? Why has there been an enormous increase in the amount of Russian citizens since the invasion? Why is Russia doing everything they can to remove Ukrainian people from the area and replace them with large numbers of Russians? Maybe to have changed the population enough to hold a "democratic" referendum in a few years to "legitimize" Crimea being Russian?

With the same excuse Russia could also invade Georgia (they partly did in 2008*), Ukrain (they have been doing so covertly since 2014), Baltic States, parts of Poland etc.

* There is a very good movie about this war, called "5 Days of War". The movie shows a lot of action with jet and helicopter attacks.
