REQ: Hawker Hunter question

Does anyone know if the two Leeuwarden-based ex-RAF Hunters wear their civil registrations G-KAXF and G-BWGL externally (either small or otherwise conceiled?).

In my own pics I've never discovered these registrations on the aircraft, but maybe someone has seen them from up close.

Hi Steef,

no, they don't. UK rules are different from those in some other countries; it is not necessary to carry the actual civil registration externally if it carries a historical c/s. The reason behind this is that owners and authorities agree this would detract from the historical "look and feel" of the aircraft. I do however remember that when they changed a RAF scheme on a Hunter T.7 into a commercially-inspired scheme, the CAA ruled that the former military serial it used to carry had to be replaced with the civil registration.

They do have to hold an exemption from the CAA. If you look up each registration on the CAA website:
https://siteapps.caa.co.uk/g-info/
you will see that both have entries in the "Display of Registration Mark Exemption Details" section giving details of the serial number they are permitted to wear.

What is interesting is that the exemption only is valid for UK airspace, and that permission to fly in foreign airspace should be given by the appropriate foreign authorities:
Once an exemption is issued by the CAA it should also be noted that this allows the flying of the aircraft in UK airspace only, if the aircraft is to be flown outside the UK then extra permission must be sought from the authorities of the countries visited or over flown.
Unfortunately I have not (yet) been able to find any online sources which exemptions have been given by foreign authorities, nor any form or legislation to request such an exemption (having checked the French and the Dutch websites). So requesting permission might just be 'something you should do, but never do'...
