Re: Japan Airshows 2019

Post by Uni »

Some infos. for 2019.

<General>
1. Usually, the JASDF release their open house schedule at around 20th March every year.
(But in these few years, they release only the date before July.)

2. Usually, the JGSDF release their open house schedule at early March, because they open their camps at the season of the cherry blossoms(early April).

3. Usually, the JMSDF release their open house schedule about 1-2 month before the event.

4. JASDF/JGSDF/JMSDF are "holiday" on Sat. and Sun. and the National holidays in Japan(Please check the holidays of this year).
There are no activities except routine maritime patrol, exercise, emergency and /or some special missions.
It is holiday from 27 Apr. to 6 May. this year.

5. There are also No activities on these days;
1) The day of the local school examinations.
2) The day of the Flying Safety which is usually 1st. Jul..
3) The year-end and 1st week of the new year(usually, around 25 Dec to 6 Jan.)
4) "O-bon" period, usually around 12 Aug. to 16 Aug..
5) The next day of the airshow or the open house day, except the transportation flight.

6. There are quite less flight from the 3rd. week of March to the The 1st. week of April(around 15 March to 3-4 April).
The end of March marks the end of the financial year in Japan. They used up their budget for the year, and maybe busy to write up /finish their paper-works.
They are also busy for the first few days of April, because new finacial year starts 1 Apr. in Japan
This means a lot of "old" organaization close on 31 Mar. and establish "new" organization on 1 Apr.. There are a lot of personnel movements, and relative ceremonies at this season.

7. Please check the NOTAM at this site before you visit to the airbase;
https://aisjapan.mlit.go.jp/Login.do
You' ll be able to get the time schedule of the mass flight, para-drop, and aerobatic
flights etc., for the airshow training.

8. Step ladder regulations
Almost all the JASDF bases have made regulations for the step ladders at the airshow.
They are different from each airbases and changing year by year.
1) You CAN NOT bring it into the base : Iruma, Hamamatsu, Komatsu, Komaki, Hyakuri and Tsuiki.
2) You can bring it into the base, but prohibit to use during the airshow(especially B.I. show); Chitose.
3) You can bring it into the base, but requested minimum use; Other JASDF base, JMSDF air base and JGSDF air fields.

2. F-35As;
1) JASDF will purchase 147 F-35s in total(incl. 42 F-35Bs).(The Cabinet Decision on 18 Dec., 2018)

That will be at Hamamatsu Air Base.

For the Saturday before the Hamamatsu air show last year, they fenced off the area to the west of the JASDF museum (at the south eastern side of the base) as parking for invitees to be bussed to the main show area for the dress rehearsal. I would expect them to open that area again for this anniversary event, as if the event is general public access, the museum itself will probably be too small.

I doubt they will celebrate the JASDF Museum being open for 20 years by closing it. But it wouldn’t surprise me if access to the museum itself and any on-base provisions is by invitation or prior application.

But as the page which links to the flyer
http://www.mod.go.jp/asdf/airpark/eventnews/
Says:

> There is a limit to the parking lot. Please use public transportation as much as possible.

It looks like it is unrestricted access. So it will probably be packed.

I wouldn’t plan to go there to look at the museum on that day – it sounds like they have a lot of activities set up:

> In rainy weather, we will exhibit the above aircraft as much as possible, and will also hold commemorative ceremonies, drum performances and music performances at the public hall

If I were going to the event, I would plan to visit the museum itself the in weeks before or after the display weekend.
I would arrive early at the weekend, arriving by public transport (I usually stay at the Toyoko Inn near the railway station and get a taxi from the station taxi rank. Since I haven’t figured out how to say “JASDF Museum” in Japanese, I have a map showing where it is, which the taxi drivers usually understand well enough to get me there).

For the flying I would consider the southern side of the airfield perimeter road to the west of the museum. I was there for the Saturday before the airshow last year, and it gave a pretty good view, although it filled up quickly. Plus parts of roadside form a bank, which gives an elevated view and makes it difficult for people to stand in front of you. It also helps to see Mount Fuji – it is over 70 miles away, so not overly impressive and only visible if the weather is really good, but it can form a notable backdrop to the activities on the runway / taxiways if you time your photos right.
This location also made apparent the “holding” system for road traffic before the car park opened. It became obvious that the cars were driving in a loop after the same ones passed by several times.

Looking at the timings, I would expect the aircraft in the flypast to get airborne some time earlier. As the schedule has “Commemorative ceremony (organizer greetings, greetings from guests, presentation of a letter of thanks, etc.)” from 10:45 to 11:45, with drummers from 11:24 to 11:29, and a brass band from 11:29 to 11:35, the aircraft may go up before 10:45 to hold (even the drummers may struggle if they are having to compete with T-4s getting airborne), then come back for a flypast at 11:35 to 11:40 towards the end of the opening ceremony. And you may get circuits when they recover, probably after the opening ceremony has finished at 11:45.

The notes for the afternoon T-4 display say “T-4 aircraft landing training display, pilot signature event”, so probably preparation, departure then circuits.
The notes for the Rescue display say “Ground display of Hamamatsu rescue team aircraft, rescue training display, pilot signature event”, So there may be some flying as well as the ground display.
If you can sign up to the Japanese NOTAM service, that may have more information closer to the time.

Apparently there will be a T-4 in special markings for the Rugby World Cup as well as one for the 20th anniversary of the museum. Not sure if they will be flying – I would expect you will have to go into the event to photograph them parked up on a hardstand.
The Sunday looks to be ground events only, but as the F-15 and F-2 aren’t mentioned on the Saturday, they could arrive on Sunday morning. But it is probably more likely they will come from 1 Technical School at the other end of the base, in which case they will be towed to the museum.

Hi Jonathan,
Your Japanese translation and schedule expectation are perfect !

This event must be very small show I think.
Well, this video shows you the T-4 demonstration at JASDF museum.
Everytime same.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FgSWjclGd9U

This time, I think they will display 2 special marking T-4s as static show from 0900-1430.
And on Saturday, they'll show you movements-activities from 1300-1430 at the side of them.
(There are Max. 4 aircrafts parking space in front of the museum.)

On Sunday, there will be only static show of the 2 special marking T-4s and F-15J and F-2A which towed from 1st. Technical School.
(No engine-run tihs time)

Re 01 Jun. JGSDF Kasumigaura

I went there in 2018. The base is on two sides of the road, the preserved helos (OK for photos) and what I hope were just truck & tracked vehicle shops on one side, open from 9ish maybe. The other side of the road is the airfield, only open from 14.00. Some of the hangars were open in the morning and a few helos performed practice flights, and you can walk round most of the base on the roads. The sun wasn't great. By the time I left (to fly to somewhere near Miho) some of the hangars had been closed, which I must assume is how they will have stayed for the afternoon. I would suggest (and others surely know better) that a week day could be more profitable here.
