Iranian B707 crash

Post by Bennie »

This morning an Iranian B707 crashed close to Tehran with 16 people on board.
Coming from Manas, the aircraft apparently made an emergency landing after which she overran the runway, crashing into a building.

Seems flight engineer survived the crash and taken to hospital.

...widely reported now that the Boeing 707 probably landed on the wrong airport...

https://avherald.com/h?article=4c2d9613&opt=0
Crash: Saha B703 at Fath on Jan 14th 2019, landed at wrong airport

Another aircraft had confused the same airports but gone around in time, see Incident: Taban MD88 at Karaj on Nov 16th 2018, went around from very low height at wrong airport.

Iran's Air Force confirmed the aircraft belonged to Saha Airlines. The only survivor recovered so far was the flight engineer on board of the aircraft. /quote]

According to first reports, the plane landed on the wrong airport:
Fath Airport (military airstrip), instead of Karaj-Payam International Airport.
The runways of both airports are almost in line. The thresholds of runways 30 and 31L are 10 km apart.
The pilot lost control of the airplane upon landing.
It smashed through an airport wall and came to rest in a town near the airport.
The airplane was transporting meat.

Looking on Google Maps/Earth, the 2 runways are about a kilometer apart and do not have the same magnetic course (nor ident).
Very sad...
