Dutch Catalina PH-PBY to be sold abroad

The organisations behind the operation of Dutch Catalina PH-PBY/16-218 regretfully had to inform everyone that from october 2018 the beloved Cat will no longer be flying in the Netherlands, even though it has been fully restored and is operational again; it will most likely be sold abroad. Reasons given were:
- the inability to recover the loss of income after the aircraft had been grounded following the landing incident with stuck nosegear in August 2017,
- the fact that financial support from governement and private sources was almost zero,
- the fact that flying with sponsors had now been deemed a commercial activity by the government, leading to less income generated due to taxation
- and the fact that through a lack of skilled volunteers more and more help had to be hired at cost to maintain and service the Catalina

It will be a sad sight to see her leave...

Perhaps, just perhaps,
PH-PBY will fly under the Stichting Exploitatie Catalina aegis until November 2018.
But after that it is "curtains"...

Due to an oil pressure problem, one of its engines was assessed as being damaged beyond repair after a testflight on Thursday, 3 august. It was unable to appear at Texel Airshow due this and all remaining flights in The Netherlands have been cancelled. The engine will be replaced and the aircraft will be sold after that.

Man man man dat daarvoor een groep ambtenaren aan het werk gezet wordt... Wat op zich mooie duidelijkheid gaf over de wetgeving die zogenaamdn beperkend was: die klacht is dus per a.s. dinsdag niet meer van toepassing en dus is het probleem echt alleen een exploitatieprobleem.

Leuk dat het is aangekaart bij de overheid..
Naar mijns insziens slaat het allemaal als een koe op een varken, als je namelijk weer kan vliegen onder de oude voorwaarden waarin alleen leden/donateurs betaald kunnen vliegen gaat dit nog steeds het inkomen beperken en komt er nog steeds niet genoeg geld binnen om dit soort toestellen in de lucht te houden..

Overigens was er vorig jaar voor de neuskraak al een behoorlijk financieel tekort!
En wel met een bedrag dat waarschijnlijk hoger was dan dat verkoop van het toestel zou kunnen bekostigen..(deze info heb ik uit een redelijk betrouwbare bron)
De schade van dat incident erbij genomen is het wel logisch dat het op een gegeven moment ophoudt...
Ik heb wel eens overwogen om lid te worden maar toen ik bovenstaande informatie kreeg wist ik wel dat dit niet te redden is..
Ik ben overigens al wel bijna twintig jaar lid van de DDA.
Zelf heb ik al meerdere keren mogen vliegen met de Catalina en ook tijdens het Catair tijdperk van de kist.
Het blijft altijd erg jammer als het weg moet maar het gaat in ieder geval naar een goed georganiseerde club waar ze er zuinig op zullen zijn!
Feit blijft wel dat een heleboel mensen vinden dat dit niet zou mogen gebeuren maar doen al die mensen ook een financiele bijdrage?
Als we echt om dit erfgoed zouden geven en financieel ook maar een kleine bijdrage zouden doen zouden een paar clubs al goed gesteund kunnen worden en zou je ook meer draagkracht genereren in de maatschappij.
Dit is voor mij en reden geweest om lid te worden van de DDA na de Dakotaramp in de Waddenzee, en lid te blijven.. Draagkracht!!

Geen leden, geen geld , geen draagkracht, geen recht van bestaan....

Overigens zijn dit natuurlijk wel mijn two cents,

DEN HAAG - Het laatste Catalina-watervliegtuig dat nog regelmatig in Nederland rondvloog,
verkast naar de Verenigde Staten.
Het is niet gelukt om geldschieters te vinden die willen bijspringen
om het militaire toestel uit 1941 in Nederland te houden.

"Voor ons houdt het op, de race is gelopen", zegt Christian Pfeiffer van erfgoedvereniging Bond Heemschut.
De vereniging had graag gezien dat de 'vliegboot' hier was gebleven.

De Amerikaanse Collings Foundation wil het toestel overnemen.
Aanstaande dinsdag wordt de koop afgerond.

Van Engelshoven had nog geopperd aan te kloppen bij de Mondriaan Stichting.
"Die zou dan mogelijk 40 procent financieren,
maar het was te kort dag om een medefinancier te vinden'', aldus Pfeijffer.

‘Farewell flight’op 5 mei 2019

Drost verwacht dat op 5 mei 2019 de Catalina nog een ‘farewell flight’ over Nederland kan maken.

“Zodat iedereen er nog naar kan zwaaien.”

Daarna moet het toestel dan in circa 45 vlieguren in zo’n 12 dagen,
via onder meer Schotland, IJsland en Canada, de overtocht naar in eerste instantie Florida maken.

Drost verwacht dat die ferry-vlucht in de derde week van mei volgend jaar kan plaatshebben.

For the spotters,
The flight schedule of the last flights are as follows:

su the 14th; we the 17th; sa the 20th; we the 24th and su the 28th April.
On all those days, three flights are planned, always 11:30; 13:30 and 15:00.
It is NOT possible to book for these flights.

Then the board wants to make a last flight befor departure, on may 5th.
The departure to USA is planned on thu the 28th of may 2019 .

On Wednesday the 1th of may,
three flights will be on the schedule.

All three flights leave from the hangar. The times are: 10.00 and 11.30 and 13.00.
Are also coming back to the hangar.

No flights on Thursday. Friday maybe 1 Trainingflight.

On Sunday 5 May 2019, the two last flights with the Catalina will be made above the Netherlands.
According to these attached routes, it will be tried to fly.

At 12.00 the route will start to the south and at 13.30 the route to the north.
A Fly-pass will be made over airport De Kooy.
